Guest guest
Hello group: My 15 year old son had lower jaw advancement yesterday...we got home this afternoon and he's pretty uncomfortable. Just wanting some reassurance from you veterans out there...I think the anxiety about not being able to breathe is hard for him...plus feeling like his mouth is full all the time...he's also very swollen. We're keeping pain meds (co-tylenol syrup) every four hours at present...and will follow his lead in regard to lengthening the time in between...That time is definitely not now. Any tips or wisdom appreciated. I joined the list weeks ago and have been reading messages in preparation for the surgery. It's been extremely helpful. My worry of the day: He's eaten nothing for a couple of days already...taken in some liquids at the hospital, plus Gatorade and water at home. I imagine his bad mood is a combination of pain and maybe hunger as well. He says he may be willing to try some Ensure later... Thanks all. Some people have tried a humidifier to get some relief for breathing. Also, my surgeon recommended Salinex (it's a salty nasal spray), and it really helped. Talk to yours about it. > Any tips or wisdom appreciated. I joined the list weeks ago and > have been reading messages in preparation for the surgery. It's > been extremely helpful. So, I'd say he's doing fine, in some way. Ensure, Boost are good. Real fruit made juices are ok as well. Chicken broth was my favourite, because I liked it before the surgery, felt comforting in a way. One thing he must absolutely do is drink water. Don't let his body get dehydrated. There are problems associated with that. However, don't expect him to eat and drink just as before. His body is, more or less, shut down at the time being. He probably doesn't move much (toilet room -> living room -> bedroom) and his activities are, most likely, severely limited. As a result, his body requires much less food. Hope this helps... Guest guest
Hi - I had my surgery (upper/lower/genio) 9 weeks ago, and I can tell you first hand that at first, I had no appetite. Even a 27 ys old I needed my mother's mother's TLC...so I moved home for a few weeks. Just like you, my mother was concerend about me not eating. But believe me, in a few days, your son will be up to eating and eventually he's start creating crazy shakes, etc. Suggestion is for him to start off drinking 1/2 an Ensure for each meal. Chocolate is good and it's easy to get down. Dont worry about variety, just find something that he'll eat and stick to that for a few days. Believe me, it ONLY gets better from here. Best of luck, > Hello group: > My 15 year old son had lower jaw advancement yesterday...we > got home this afternoon and he's pretty uncomfortable.
