Hi: Yesterday I sent an email asking which meds patients are taking for

pain & I haven't received any answers. I'm not sure if my email was

received by the group or not. Bob is starting to have pain from his

shoulder to his foot. I would appreciate knowing which meds patients are

taking. Thanks..Regards, jerrie

Hi Jerrie,

I can only speak for my sister on what pain meds she takes. She has lots of

neuropathic pain, mostly shoulder and neck area. She takes Neurontin and it

does take the edge off of it. She takes 800mg. 4 times a day.

Hope this helps.

sorry I must have missed the posting. I take Ultram. In the past I took

Darvecette. I have yet to find a 'pain' med that doesn't have severe

constipation as an side effect.

Jerrie,

Is all the pain on one side? That does not sound normal if so. I would

schedule a visit to the doctor in any case, but especially if it is from

shoulder to foot all on one side.

There are many meds used by list members for MSA type pain such as Neurontin,

something that starts with a K, Baclofen, and even Sinemet helps some with pain.

Usually opiates are not used for pain in MSA patients as they can add to

symptoms of MSA. But some times even they are used for short periods.

Later in MSA when dystonia sets in, doctors may use Botox shots to give movement

and relief pain. At that point, they may also use opiates at times. Remember

that opiates on top of MSA may cause symptoms of confusion, fatigue and even

reduce existing motion which would confuse things like identifying infection.

Ask your doctor if muscle spasm is causing the pain and work on the cause of the

pain. Exercise can help at times.

Take care, Bill Werre

Jerrie,

I see you posted on Saturday and today is Monday. Yesterday, I didn't

feel good enough to be on the PC. My #1 symptom that I find bothersome is

pain. The only thing that has worked for me, (and yes, we have even tried a

few of the drugs that are contraindicated) is Neurontin. It takes the edge

off. It doesn't completely relieve the pain but it makes it workable most

of the time.

Of course, everyone is different so please speak with the MDS about which

medication might be right for your husband. What works for one might not

work for another as all of us have different symptoms and react to

medications differently.

Hugs,

Deborah
