Dear Dodie: The mattress that came with Bob's hospital bed is fairly firm. I bought quite a heavy mattress pad - almost like an additional mattress and put an egg crate foam on top. He is pleased the way it is. I know how it is when you have to make adjustments to what is available. I went everywhere with the prescription for a commode with a let-down side for Bob. I had a regular one for my Mom so I knew he could not adjust to that. I visited 4 or 5 medical supply places - some would not let me pay the difference between what Medicare allowed and the price of the let-down side model. Finally - I had lost the pic I had of one with a let-down sides and went to a place called RAP medical supplies. The man spoke Russian fluently and English poorly. It was funny my trying to describe what I needed without a pic (you would have to be there) to a man who spoke Russian. I'm still not sure what happened - I don't speak Russian - I did not have to pay anything. I signed a few papers - probably gave away the house - who knows. I got what I wanted - that was more than a year ago - and haven't seen a bill yet. He runs the supply place from which Medicare rented the Hospital Bed and Wheelchair. I did not take possession so that they could be under Maintenance. I guess - when the motor on the Hospital bed goes it is quite expensive to fix and with the advice I read here I went with Maintenance. Hope you can get a mattress to make you comfortable I think that is very important. Pat from Framingham MA

The mattress that came with my hospital bed is like a marshmallow. Hubby

went to the supplier yesterday to see if we could get a firmer one. The man

told him 'sorry' that's what comes with all their beds. Baloney! Then he

told Jim he'd see what he could do and give us a call. Any suggestions?

Dodie,

Baloney is a polite word, I would have used Harry Truman's word for it :o)

Usually the hospital bed mattresses are too firm. We had a waterproof mattress

which was very firm and put a eggcrate mattress cover (foam)on top of it. We

also had a Serta extra firm mattress made for hospital beds which was great

until we desperately needed the waterproof mattress. But we bought that

ourselves for $800 at a mattress store.

Take care, Bill Werre

Dodie,

I know what I'm about to say will be of no help at all but it was the

first thing that popped into my head...scarry enough...I know.

Make the supplier sleep on it for about a week and see if you don't get a

new one that is better than the one that " comes with the bed. "

I got an air mattress for a hospital bed that allows me to set the

firmness.... problem here is no hospital bed. puts it on top of the

regular mattress each morning and then takes it off at night. There appears

to be some kind of theme going on here.

Here is a pic... if it will upload... sorry, my eyes are closed but you

get the idea. Never mind... hotmail won't let me upload a pic this

morning... maybe it will later.

Hugs and much luck with the salesman in getting the mattress that you

need.
