Guest guest
I had this, too. I just tried to take warm showers or sometimes during the day I would run hot water in the sink and put a towel over my head. The humidity seemed to loosen it up and I could " gag " it out. That sounds pretty gross... a lot was gross the first week, actually two. I also had a humidifier running constantly. I don't know if your doctor would approve the hot water... I just did it because it felt good to get it loose. That feeling of " gaging " on phlegm lasted the first two weeks.... Good luck and I, too, would call your Doc when he opens just to be sure there isn't something else he could do. ~Cathy Question about bleeding... Hello folks: My son is having trouble sleeping (we're now starting Day Five, post lower jaw surgery) due to what he describes as blood creating thick phlegm at the back of his throat, which he's having trouble getting rid of. I am going to call my surgeon when they open, but for now I am appealing to the wisdom of this group...which has been invaluable so far. I suggested continuing to drink a lot to keep fluids, and continuing his warm salt water rinses (which were recommended by the doctor and have been helpful) moving stuff out...he says that the more he drinks the more bleeding occurs. It's not major bleeding...he has described his tongue as being cut up a bit from wiring . Let me know if you have any thoughts. Guest guest
So what do you do if its really hot and you have the air conditioner running AND you have the humidifier running as well? My daughter is schedule for her surgery on 7/14 and I hope the weather isn't too hot. Re: Question about bleeding... I had this, too. Guest guest
I would avoid all milk and chocolate products, as they make phlegm worse. Other thick drinks might make it worse, too - ask him after he's eaten whatever if it makes things better or worse. One of my medical books says that if your tongue is sore, you should avoid spicy foods, alcohol (think mouthwashes), and tobacco. My OS wouldn't let me use an alcohol-based mouthwash until week six, and then he said to dilute it. When my throat is gunky I like hot, citrus-y drinks, like hot water, lemon juice, and a dab of honey. That's also good for sore throats, with more honey if you need soothing instead of de-gunking. Guest guest
I kept the AC on 73. I live in Florida, and it was very hot outside. I didn't ask my husband to see the electric bill. As far as humidifiers, I had a cool mist humidifier running all the time. It kept moisture in the air that, even in Florida, would dry out with AC. I could take hot, but only in spurts. I would burn up if I put a warm cloth on my face for any length of time, but then five minutes later I would freeze and need to get under the covers. I am sure everyone is different, I would just try to keep her as comfortable as possible, but allow her (with doctor's approval) to decide whether she needs it hotter or colder. I, personally, was a booger. My family had to wait on me for weeks " warm this up, get my ice, why is it so hot in here, can I have some more water, I need more pillows.... Guest guest
How about a cool air humidifier? Or vaporizer? And the number for an a/c repair service that will come on weekends, too. (You can tell I live in subtropical Alabama, can't you, and that the humidity has been about 100 percent here, with temps in the 90s?) I'll take a little of your heat, and you can have a little of our chillyness (coolth?). It's almost the end of June, and Wisconsin is still cold. We grilled out for Father's Day, and everyone was running around in search of sweatshirts and jackets. And if anyone out there is experiencing drought, I'll send you our basement-filling, continual rains. Does that travel best UPS or parsel post? Guest guest
i'll take any breath of cool air you can send our way. Don't talk to me about rain, though... We're in the middle of our daily afternoon thunderstorm. Mobile vies with a place up near Seattle for the highest annual rainfall in the Continental U. S. Although we haven't had as much this year, and our farmers are hurting. And man, I wish I could shovel you some degrees Fahrenheit! Guest guest
I had the exact same experience of blood crusting in the back and top of my mouth. That's why I believe everything tastes so bad for the first while. For me, it really bothered me for probably the first 3/4 days. Now (day 8), I can notice it's there a little. Enough to still affect the taste of things. But I've not spitted out and blood after gargaling like I did a few times before day3/4. It's also in my nose. And I believe it takes much longer to clear the sinuses of blood then the back of the throat. > Hello folks: > My son is having trouble sleeping (we're now starting Day Five, > post lower jaw surgery) due to what he describes as blood > creating thick phlegm at the back of his throat, which he's having > trouble getting rid of. Guest guest
that's great advice. I really wouldn't try to gag it out too much. That's only going to lead to temporary relief, but may end up making it worse. > I would avoid all milk and chocolate products, as they make phlegm > worse.
