Genio question

Hi all,

just wondering before I visit my doctor for a consultation in case I

need genioplasty (chin augmentation) on top of jaw surgery. I have

seen online how they do the chin surgery, from x rays and sample

images. It seems that immediately after the operation there is " two

pieces " created, the bone is actually cut and moved forward. That

kind of seems odd. For those who have gone through genioplasty, will

the bone actually fuse back into ONE bone after healing? Or will it

always be separated and attached with screws and plates? I wouldnt

want to keep the hardware long term beyond a year there, so I am

wondering how it actually feels once it heals, if it is smooth and

one whole bone or with " rough edges " and awkward looking.

I hope some others who have seen their x rays post-op after healing

can elucidate me. Thanks a lot.

I've actually got six stainless steel wires in my chin, but they

can't be felt, nor are they a problem almost 2 years post-op. It was

my surgeon's preference, normally he plates & screws the jaws (which

he did in the case of my upper/lower surgery at the same time).

The bone will heal just like other breaks in the body, and the

hardware is not needed after that point. Some surgeons use dissolving

hardware and screws, mine doesn't. Sometimes people have to have

screws/plates removed later post-op if they cause infection or become

loose (mine didn't).

As for it looking rough or awkward, your soft tissue compensates for

a lot, unless I were an expert and looking at xrays, I would never

know I'd had a genioplasty. I really don't want to have more

radiation from xrays, so I'm not that curious to want to see the

details : )

Hope that helps.

Sorry to be slow to answer...

I have no plates, nor wires, as does Miz Fiddly. But I do have

six screws, and wouldn't know it, if I didn't know it. No sense of

their presence, at least now, and they've been there for two years

tomorrow.

Why you worried about getting them out at this point? If they're

troublesome, your doc can probly remove them, pretty easily, from

what I understand. But their function is to hold things in place,

best I understand, while the bone grows back together. Some surgeons

(although not many in the U.S., far as I know) actually use a

resorbable polymer.

By all means, ask your surgeon, since it seems to be a concern. But

don't borrow trouble, either... You can go to loony places with your

imagination -- I did, and I know. no problems for me at all with

those six little titanium screws.

Best,

Cammie
