Guest guest
I was evaluated for orthognathic surgery for an open bite recently, and it was mnetioned to me that during the surgery they can reshape your tongue if necessary. Has anyone ever had this done? My open bite is most likely caused by a tongue thrust according to my orth and the surgeon. They do not think that my tongue is abnormally sized but since they brought it up I have become aware of the position of my tongue in my mouth and I find myself often biting down on it when I think my jaw is closed (it is such an unconscious thing I don't even notice it, but then when I do I realize that I have been biting hard and my tongue hurts). I even woke up in the middle of the night a few nights ago and I think the pain in my tongue from me biting on it actually caused me to wake up. I just cannot imagine having surgery to reshape the tongue. If anyone has had this done, what was recovery like and how is life today? Thanks for any replies! Guest guest
I only heard of this once, not on these sites, but through a link where an inmate was suing a doctor who had performed this procedure. He claimed it was extremely painful and had ruined his life. Of course, that's just one case, who knows whether there are more successful cases or not. You could try a google search and see what you come up with. Tongue thrust is a frustrating condition, I would suggest looking into correcting that habit, as it can undo the surgical/orthodontal results from what I've read. I don't have this problem, but I did tell my ortho that I felt my tongue didn't have room inside my mouth - he said " we can fix that " , meaning that over time, as they non-surgically expanded my upper palate, and through orthodontal/orthognathic surgery corrected my skeletal jaw dysfunction, I did find myself with more room for my roving tongue : ) (for the record, I had upper/lower/genio for Class II almost 2 years ago) > I was evaluated for orthognathic surgery for an open bite recently, > and it was mnetioned to me that during the surgery they can reshape > your tongue if necessary. Guest guest
I too have always felt my tongue was too big for my mouth. the roof of my mouth i will describe as a capital A-Frame Tent. High and narrow. I was often biting my tongue, etc. I have been told that through surgery this (which is not a priority) will feel improved. i look forward to that. > > I was evaluated for orthognathic surgery for an open bite > recently, > > and it was mnetioned to me that during the surgery they can > reshape > > your tongue if necessary.
