Barb:

Some herbs are used as urinary antiseptic. This maybe what they are talking about when they suggest a urinary antiseptic.

Here is a list of some that are used as an urinary antiseptic. Fred's first urologist had him on Saw Palmetto for awhile to see if that would help control the UTI's. I think Cranberries work just as well.

Urinary Tract

The role of the urinary system is production, drainage, storage and intermittent elimination of urine. The kidneys, which there are two, are responsible for ridding the body of waste products, particularly nitrogenous end-products of protein metabolism. They regulate the bodies ion concentration and water balance, aid in the regulation of blood pressure and produce erythropoietin which regulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow.

The urine produced is passed through the ureters which connect the kidneys to the bladder, here the urine is stored until it is ready to be excreted through the urethra. The following list of herbs for the urinary system is not meant to replace proper medical care or diagnosis, nor is the list totally complete. It is intended that the reader use it as a guide then inquire by a capacity they choose to decide which is best for them.

Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)Leaves are used Anti-microbial, astringent. Main active ingredients: Arbutin which is split into glucose and hydroquinone in the kidney.Used mainly as a urinary tract antiseptic, for cystitis, pyelitis. It has also been indicated for possible use during kidney stones (Hoffmann, Weiss). It is also used to soothe irritation of the membranes of the urinary tract. Good in combination with Buchu, Thuja.

CONTRAINDICATED in pregnancy, oxytocic effect.

1-2 teaspoonfuls to 1 cup boiled water three times a day. Tincture 2-4 mls three times per day.

Birch (Betula alba)

Bark and young leaves are used

Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic.

Main active ingredients: Flavonoids- high percentage of hyperoside, saponins, and a salicylic acid methyl ester.

Should not be taken longer than 5 weeks due to its irritant effect on the kidneys. Also used for chronic arthritis and gout. Fresh juniper berries can be used as an upper respiratory antiseptic, use as lozenger in cases of possible contact with infected individual.

1 tablespoon of slightly ground berries in 2 cups boiled water, morning and night. Tincture, .5-1 ml three times per day.Parsley (Petroselinum crispum)

Hi all,

Saw Palmetto was mentioned for UTI's and I just want to mention that as a

" natural supplement " it is not well controlled or tested. Food products like

cranberry juice are processed in inspected plants and are subjected to random

testing. However, I am not sure about cranberry pills as they are probably

considered a supplement. Note too that cranberry sauce is about the right

consistancy for easy swallowing.

If a product is not inspected, there is a chance of contamination or bacteria in

the supplement. The last thing a MSA patient needs is a bacterial infection. I

always made sure Charlotte got as sterile as possible food or liquids.

Another problem with untested supplements is that they vary so bad in dosage. A

test of off the shelf supplements several years ago in California showed

variations of up to 8 times the listed dosage. Beware of what is going into

your body. There are some supplements that are tested, but a store owner is NOT

the best authority on which ones are tested.

Take care, Bill Werre
