Hey, Dammit...! Welcome to the other side. I can't believe you

took a mile walk on day 1...pretty impressive.

Sounds like you're eating well. Congrats!

Glad to hear from you Thom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you're having it very smooth, congratulations :-)

Hickup : Codeine is known for that... if you're on Codeine, you

might have to reduce the dosage, or have the doctor change your

medication.

people!! Hope you keep doing well! Mitzi

Break on throught to the other

side...

Sounds like a catchy tune! Well, it's day one, and I am on the

other side now. Thank you to all of you for your thoughts and

prayers. The surgery went well, only took 45 minutes to advance my

lower 12mm. I woke briefly in recovery, and was moved up to my room

for my 23 hour stay. I thought I'd be strong enough to go home by

5:00PM, but my throat hurt so much I couldn't swallow, even with the

morphine on board. So, they doubled my dosage, and that helped a

little, but then I stopped trying to drink all the cold drinks they

were shoving in front of me and drank warm, and that helped

tremendously.

By 6:30 I had my first cold drink (7-up), and by 10:30 I had my

first snack (strawberry yogurt). I was able to get off the morphine

then, and take Vicodin (which is what I have now that I'm at home.

Only problem with the vicodin is it doesn't let me sleep, so that's

something I'll have to deal with tonight. I had another snack

(vanilla pudding) with my 2:30 vicodin, and breakfast this morning

was cream-o-wheat and milk. When I got home this afternoon I had

chicken noodle soup, and stuffed shells for dinner. Gee, this isn't

going to be so bad after all! I even managed to take a mile walk

this afternoon, followed by an hour nap.

I'm not wired, and may be banded after a week to a week and a half.

I've got my first follow up appointment with the OS Friday AM. The

only real problem right now is one of the medications I've gotten

(and I know it's not the vicodin) is giving me the hiccups. Got to

get that one fixed soon!

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your support. I'll post pics on

site 2 as soon as I find my USB cable.

Ray,

Nope, no codeine for me, just Vicodin, and I know that's not the

culprit. I've taken V for back pain without any problem like this.

So that leaves the residual anethesia, penicillin (not), or one of

the several steroids I had in the hospital. The hiccups to seem to

be more pronounced after I eat, or if I'm laying down.

As you can also tell by the time of this post, the Vicodin is still

keeping me awake. The good news is it's been over six hours since

my last dose and I don't think I'll need any more since I'm not in

any pain. It may be time to switch to ibuprofen for the mild sore

throat.

The numbness isn't so bad either. I can pretty much draw a line

like a ventriloquist dummy would have for a moveable jaw, and that's

where my numbness is. My teeth aren't touching yet, but the OS's

partner came in before I was discharged and said that was due to

posturing from swelling. Who knows, I may get my own packet of

secret slingshots tomorrow morning!

Try, if you can, to walk around the house when you get them. My

friend had a surgery in December (it's in the familly... lol!) and

he got a severe case of hiccups when he took his codeine pills.

We called the hospital and they said to walk for 5 minutes (up to

10) that it should eliminate the problem. If not, reduce the codeine

and see if it helps. In your case, perhaps a little walk will suffice,

even if codein isn't the guilty one!

I was done with codeine within at day #6. I stopped and realized there

was no more pain. Tylenol for the other needs sufficed, as well. And as

for having normal nights of sleep, I got them back on last Saturday I

think. Before that, I used to get to bed at 10 o'clock, and wake up at

4 AM... This week, I woke up at 5h30 (my regular time), but I get back

into bed at 7h30 untill 9h30. I don't know why, I just know I'm still

very tired.

Humm... let's go get some M&Ms (or smarties, or small Reese Pieces..!)

Hahaha!

Anyway, I'm very happy to see you here, and to read that you're doing

fine!

Congratulations, Dammit!

It sounds like you have really come through in great spirits! I think that all

of this really requires the right attitude to help it go smoothly. Me? I try

to stay positive, but can be a bit of a worry wart. (What? My teeth aren't

touching yet? AHH!)

You're already on pudding? Well, you'll be eating pizza and Happy Meals before

you know it ;)

Keep us posted on your excellent progress!

Welcome to the other side! :)

I'm glad to hear you're doing so well.

I thought I had an easy time, but you're apparently doing terrific.

I can't believe you went for a walk so soon after surgery. I went for

my first walk about a week after my surgery. But then again, my

surgery took 6 hours, so it took me longer to recover from the

anesthesia and find the door :)

You're doing incredibly well on the eating front also. I was banded

so tightly I couldn't even get yogourt or applesauce into my mouth

until 2 weeks after surgery (which is when I got most of the elastics

removed).

Happy healing!

You only had to be in surgery for 45 minutes?!? I can't want to see

your pictures because I am going to have lower only (advanced 8-10mm)

next May (tentatively) and am kinda nervous about it now. I do have

a question for you (being a guy and all)...did you have a catheter?

Good continued luck with your recovery,

,

No catheter, but that doesn't mean you won't encounter any urinary

changes. I did find out that the anethesia gases do compromise your

bladder control. I was on an IV for the first 18 hours or so, and

had to go about every 90 minutes. But, it seemed like I had

difficulty starting my flow and keeping it going. My OS checked on

me the morning after and attributed it to the anethestic. It's

almost fully functional now though, two days post op.
