Guest guest
My wisdom teeth were extracted 4-5 months before my braces were put on. I wore my braces 23 months before they did my surgery. Surprisingly I had very little pain, the discomfort was from the swelling and that takes time to go down. The area around my chin is still numb and the OS expects that to take several more months. My surgery was extensive, upper and lower. My upper teeth were lowered with a bone graft from my hip and my lower jaw was pulled back. Tomorrow I will be 16 weeks post-op and glad that I did it. Good Luck in your trip. Kev

Guest guest
I had my wisdom teeth out several years ago, and I am 8 weeks post-op from surgery. I think that the pain from the wisdom teeth was much harder to deal with. I don't know why that was... I remember being very swollen for about a week, then semi-swollen for another week with the extractions. The recovery for surgery is longer, but it was more tolerable pain wise for me. I would ask your OS what he suggests. I know some people have had the wisdom teeth and the surgery at the same time! Good luck on your decision. ~Cathy confused! hey everyone...im really concerned about my surgery (upper, lower). im to get my wisoms extracted, but i also am considering doing the surgery soon after..what do u think? hows the healing process...how long can i expect to feel pain/numbness...somebody plz tell me wat to do! can i get a site for reference? personal experiences are always welcome! thx
Guest guest
I had my wisdom teeth extracted many years ago, while I was in the Air Force. I guess they had grown in strangely and my dentist told me they had some decay. He wanted me to have them extracted. So I said, " OK, are you going to put me to sleep for that? " He said, " naw, we'll just use a local, you're tough, right? " Well actually I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to teeth being yanked out but that's another story. They pulled the teeth, all 4 at once, with a local. Quite an experience. However, the recovery wasn't bad as I recall. I think I took one day off of work (in the military you need an act of congress to get a day off). I have read on here that many people have a tough time with the wisdom teeth. Given that, I think I would opt to have the wisdom teeth extracted in advance of the other surgery, for a couple of reasons. First, to make the surgery less complicated for the surgeon (don't want to give him too much to do) and second, to make the surgery recovery easier. It may end up costing more that way, depending on your insurance, because they can probably justify the wisdom teeth extraction as part of the surgery. Regarding healing/numbness - I will be 3 weeks post-op on Thursday from lower jaw advancement. I feel I'm pretty much healed, still a little swelling here and there. I went back to work a week ago. There is some numbness in an area on the right side of my lower lip and chin, but it is getting better. People tell me it will take 3 months for all the numbness to subside. Guest guest
I think you'd better talk with your surgeon about this, if you haven't. Some docs won't do the surgery after extractions until the jaw has had sufficient time to heal, just to prevent unexpected surprises. This should not worry you if you know your surgeon is ok with your plan. He (or she) knows way, way more than do I...
