Guest guest
My surgery scheduling adventure: In mid-May, my OS told me that I would either be having surgery in July or August. He also told me to postpone my job search until after I recovered. Thinking he's the expert, I sucked it up and trudged into my current (not so great)job every day since without even daring to check out job sites less I be tempted. I also stopped following up on the jobs that I had already applied for. Well, as we all know, July starts in 2 days, and since I still didn't have a surgery date, I was a little concerned. I called my OS and was directed to the assisting surgeon as he apparently is the one who will be scheduling. The assistant called me back last night with the news that his computer is down, so he's not sure, but I probably won't get into surgery until sometime in October. Sounds like they forgot about me, and the schedule filled up pretty fast because they only do this type of procedure one day a week. So, basically he was telling me I had no choice but to wait till then. Had I known this I could've started working somewhere else already and been there several months before having to take off. Not to mention the fact that I will have to withdraw from the Masters classes in the fall I was registered for. The really sad thing is that I delayed starting them in summer because of the surgery. So, in essence, this last month and entire summer have been/will be a complete waste. I skipped a free VACATION for this. AAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!! The only thing I can ask for, besides a place to vent (and thanks for that) is for anyone who reads this to keep their fingers crossed that he could find some time earlier in the schedule to squeeze me in. About to hit something really hard... -Zoe
Guest guest
Zoe, this note of yours could have been written by me. i too had my surgery postponed 3 times, lastly due to becoming pregnant, so not their fault. i was sooooooooo frustrated. was in the SAME BOAT with graduate work, that i end up just completing this past December, i was putting jobs on hold as i was told i was going to have surgery 2 summers ago..... i WILL say some prayers for you that something opens up. i know how frustrating it can be. I did call a three way meeting with my OS and OD to go over my agenda, let them know my concerns and anticipated time tables. i am a teacher, so i really felt i needed to have this done during summer, etc. Best of luck. > My surgery scheduling adventure: > > In mid-May, my OS told me that I would either be having surgery in > July or August. Guest guest
Of course I will keep my fingers figuratively crossed for you -- and I'll wager that many others will, too. And I hate that you hit this snarl. One more example of the unexpected timeframe for this stuff. I do think that some surgeons try to work with folks in school by giving them some preference for breaks, summer, spring, Christmas, whatever. Doesn't sound as though your guys are on top of that one. I believe I'd call the scheduler soon, as in tomorrow, and very politely and sympathetically ask whether you can get a precise date locked down, with proviso that they'll fit you in earlier, if it is possible. (People do, sadly, get cancelled because they're not ready, because some previously unknown health problem pops up, because insurance coverage waffles on them, or even because they get a cold or fever that turns out to be nothing.) I am a believer in going on with one's life as much as possible and not letting the surgery delay things any more than you must; I'm also a believer in trying to get someone (as in, the surgeon and hospital, the two essentials) pinned down about specifics as soon as you hear you're ready. Good wishes to you. Vent away, any time. Cammie > My surgery scheduling adventure: > > In mid-May, my OS told me that I would either be having surgery in > July or August. Guest guest
When the surgeon called to schedule, he asked me what I had going on with school and work, etc. and I told him. Sounds like the best he could do anyway was October. He told me he'd call me back yesterday, and he didn't which only adds to the frustration. I want to call him again to tell him if I have to wait that long, I might as well just wait till the december school break, but I don't want to give him an easy way out...wonder what would happen if I called my OS and told him about this? He's on the teaching staff there...maybe he could get me bumped? > > My surgery scheduling adventure: > > > > In mid-May, my OS told me that I would either be having surgery in > > July or August.
