Hello everyone! I was just told that I need lower jaw surgery and on

other support sites I've heard A LOT of people have permanent

numbness. Did this happen to any of you? How long before the

numbness went away?

Oh... I don't know about " A LOT " of people. It is true that many, if

not most, have some permanent numbness. If they do, it doesn't go

away -- but then you knew that. ;~)

Many people have temporary numbness, ranging from altered sensation,

which is just a kind of odd feeling, to full-blown, dead-as-a-

doornail lack of sensation.

I was among the most fortunate, not to gloat. No numbness, either

lasting or temporary, at all. I had lower jaw advanced, using a

Bilateral Saggital Split Osteotomy, by 5 mm. and the jaw moved 3 mm

to the right at the same time.

You certainly need to consider the possibility of numbness, whether

you're dealing with upper, lower or both. It is there, and real. What

it is not is predetermined for everyone, or even most, I think. And

most who do have lasting numbness from the lower, best I remember,

have it in a small spot on the lip or the chin -- not throughout the

whole lower face. Which is not to say that you might not wind up with

that, either... That's one of the issues on which you have to make up

your mind whether it's worth the risk or not.

Best wishes to you.
