Guest guest
We have just begin to try suppositories - they work great, but will have to discuss with the doctor the longterm effects. We do use Ducosate, Aloe Vera juice, prune juice and Metamucil daily, but am afraid we are reaching the stage that Bob just can't generate a bowel movement on his own. Any advice on longterm use of suppositories? Thanks so much, Elaine Grimmesey
Guest guest
, As the autonomic system that controls bowl movement breaks down in MSA, the bowel can get fuller and fuller along its whole length, even though it is not technically blocked. You need to have this symtom checked out. In Peg's case they took an x-ray of the bowels that showed her large intestine was extended and full along its whole length. That indicated that we had to be much more careful about making sure she had regular bowel movements. Guest guest
I believe some have used Miralax with some success. I think it may need a prescription. Debbie
Guest guest
Can't really give you any advice, we've been using them about 3 years and they still work. Guest guest
Thanks. How did they check it? CT scan? My gut hurt terribly again today. But I won't take a laxative until tomorrow or the next day. Although it did not cause any marked clearing of the tract, I have meetings tomorrow and don't want to mess them up. I have kinda feared this today though - that this is effecting my lower digestive tract. GI at Mayo noted abnormally slow movement, of the intestines, but that was it. GI stuff will be very tough to get done here. Went through 2 GI docs pre-Mayo in Tulsa. Basically, had last one quit - because he said it was not a GI problem. Very closed minded. Of course, GI doc at Mayo wasn't much better. He said " neurologist stated patient MIGHT have a SLIGHT case of autonomic neuropathy... " and went on to ignore that finding and say that nothing neurological could explain all I was experiencing. However, the neuro at Mayo actually said the opposite. He said I definitely had autonomic neuropathy, and that it explained ALL my symptoms. Anyway, I'm rather soured on GI docs, and they're rather soured on me. Meanwhile, I continue to lose weight and vomit daily (8 months plus now). Sorry for the rambling. Thanks for responding, and I'll pass it on to my internist. She's as frustrated as me with all of this stuff :-) > , > > As the autonomic system that controls bowl movement breaks down in MSA, the > bowel can get fuller and fuller along its whole length, even though it is > not technically blocked. Guest guest
Miralax is a prescription item. We have used it with Terry for a mild, but persistent, case of constipation. It is more effective than Metamucil and much more palatable. However, we are not sure her constipation is MSA related. Guest guest
Elaine: We too used suppositories quite often for Ken. But I always bought the glycerin ones until the Hospice nurse told me how much better the Dulcolax ones were. Be sure you get them. the difference was amazing.
