Anesthesia-Terrified?

Hi all,

I'm scheduled to have my lower jaw surgery in 6 weeks. I know I

want to do it and move on with my life but now I'm begging to get

worried. I'm not worried about having my jaw wired for six

weeks,

taking fluids only, or having to go through all that pain.

I am actually having bad thoughts about the surgery itself and what

might go wrong with anesthesia.

Can any one tell me if I'm overacting or direct me to where I can

read more about anesthesia ?

Thanks all

Your hospital should be able to provide you with information. Also

check out the Links section of this site for other resources.

Everybody goes through the same anxiety - I was also a bit nervous

about the anesthesia. It's important that you understand the risks

but then move on, don't dwell on them. You can drive yourself crazy

worrying about it. I guess it's fear of the unknown.

The technology they have today is pretty amazing. My anesthesia was

perfect - no problems whatsoever. One minute you're awake, and two

seconds later your surgery is over. It goes more smoothly for some

than others but mine went well.

I'm not sure if all hospitals do this but with mine, the

anesthesiologist calls you at home the night before the surgery, and

you have a brief chat. He asks you questions about allergies,

family history, etc. and then you can give him your questions and

concerns.

I would say the anethesia is the one thing you shouldn't worry about.

Well, actually, it's probably the riskiest part of this surgery.

You're giving up your breathing to someone else, and trusting that

they'll bring you back.

But it's one of the risks you take in undergoing this procedure. Most

have no problems, as you've described, I went to sleep pretty quickly

and 2 seconds later I woke up (3.5 hours later, actually).

I did not have the opportunity to speak with my anaesthesiologist

prior to the holding tank on the morning of surgery, but he did a

perfect job. The hospital took a lot of information at my pre-

admissions visit a week before. I also took in information from my

mom - she has problems having a tube down her throat (I think the

info says her epiglottis can't be seen), so they have to use a mask

whenever she has surgery. I talked about this with the

anaesthesiologist, he took a look down my throat, and said this would

be no problem for me at all.

As Jay says, it's something you need not dwell on, it's out of your

control, like so many things going into surgery. Worry when you have

something to worry about! (like post-op drooling, numbness, lack of

appetite, etc.)

Probably you will not have a lot of difficult pain, first.

As for the anesthesia -- talk with the anesthesiologist, if that's an

option for you.

But also realize that if you were in an awful auto accident (more

likely than jaw surgery, probably) nobody would think twice about

giving you anesthesia to mend your wounds. That helped me relax.

Also, you will have very skilled, highly trained professionals

monitoring your vital signs every minute you are the least bit under.

Your chances of surviving this op are probably better than your

chances of being alive six months from now, without it, not because

it's lifesaving, but because you will be under more careful

monitoring and attention for those few hours.
