Guest guest
Sorry to hear you have had such problems with your braces. I actually don't mind mine at all-This is my 10th month with them and I do all the things I did before-and I actually smile more than my pre-brace days. Connie > > > > Does anyone else HATE braces? Guest guest
I think i would hate to have braces during my university days... believe it or not, i think it's easier having braces when you're in your 30s... I'm 36 and been in braces for close to 14 months.. i hated them for the first 2 weeks. Then I considered them a nuisance for the next 3 months. I also wanted to explain that I had braces, but I realized no one cares... If you feel self-conscious about them, then it will show in your body language and that is bad... it's all how you carry yourself.. Consider yourself lucky that you'll have more years to enjoy your perfected smile.. > > > > > > Does anyone else HATE braces? Guest guest
Try getting braces when you're 46 years old. Two things happened to me: 1. People in the office came up to me and said how much they wanted to have THEIR teeth fixed. So it was seen as a positive. 2. I was mighty embarassed the day they went on (they felt HUGE in my mouth), but by the end of the day, I figured it was just dumb to hide them - it's not my fault or problem what other people think - so I gave everyone I saw the rest of that day a BIG grin and a good look at them in the process. I was just fine after that. As for no running water in your campsite, you can use a zip-n-squeeze and flush water into your mouth - it's better than nothing, and it's probably ok in the short term (think of the post-op, when you won't be able to brush either - you're not likely to get major cavities). What counts in cleanliness is what you do in the long term, as far as I've experienced. I was far better at cleaning my teeth properly during this whole process than I ever was in my previous 46 years. I got over the self-perceived humiliation of braces, I suppose you will too. Like zulu says, it's all in how you feel about it that shows. But if it's really bugging you, you can opt out of it all, you know. Choice is up to you : ) > > > > > > > > Does anyone else HATE braces? Guest guest
I have braces and I'm in my " University Days " My braces and I have a love/hate relationship I should think. I hate the way they make me look, but I love the way they will make me look. Also, in some subconsious way, I think they help me keep my attention on the books instead of other, more entertaining things... > > > > > > > > > > Does anyone else HATE braces? It's been 22 months. 22 long months. 22 months of living hell. They cut my lips, I have to wear wax almost 5 out of 7 days. I've talked about that with my ortho and he said my mouth is too small (or was, since the surgery). After the surgery, I only wear wax 24 / 7 in the front, lower jaw, because of the surgical hooks. However... Last year, I got like 3/4 of an inch close of cutting these da... thing. My friend stopped me. In fact, the said I had the wrong cutter and that I would probably have hurt my gums more than fix the problem... ;-) Later, a few months after that, I discovered a way to make the little hooks (where the wire passes through) unglue from my teeth... That was cool! I could get " pressure-free " for a few days. For those interested, sugar stuff (especially chocolate bars) makes the glue very fragile. I can't say it works for everyone, but it worked for me.. I let a few pieces of Aero melt on one tooth... and a few hours later, the hook unglued. To quote , " you can opt out of it all " , I tried that. My ortho was really willing to stop the treatment and forget about the remaining money I owed him. I took a few days to think it over. He came to realized the braces didn't go well with me. I hated them, and apparently, they hated me as well... I came to realize this would only delay the inevitable. I need braces I need them to eat normally, to look normally, to cure some health issues (stomach problems). In fact, as much as I hate them, I need them badly. So I talked to my ortho again. We sat down for an hour and discuss the alternatives. Surgery / no surgery, regular or shorten treatment, etc. At the end, I was convinced on the braces. Guest guest
I just turned 46, in braces, and feel fortunate for the cure. I can understand why some have a harder time than others with braces. I guess I am lucky. Just remember, before you know it you will be brace free. I wish I would have done this twenty years ago when I was first approached about the surgery. I had too many other financial obligations at the time. Now is better than never. Good luck with the braces, don't give up.. coble61583 no_reply > wrote:I have braces and I'm in my " University Days " My braces and I have a love/hate relationship I should think. After the surgery, I only > wear wax 24 / 7 in the front, lower jaw, because of the surgical hooks. Ouch, you poor sod! I got poked and jabbed by mine the first few days but was able to tough it out without using the wax - that forced my mouth to adapt more quickly. Sticking a finger in these days I can feel where it's all toughened up, amusing! Appearance-wise it's been much less of an deal than I imagined - lowers are metal and generally hidden, the uppers are white or transparent ceramics - hardly visible. The only thing that really shows right now is the archwire running across my upper teeth, only really visible when I smile big. Some people took quite a while to even notice they were in. And the girls in my life didn't even give a toss - one tried to take an 'after' photo and was disappointed that it was difficult to tell the difference! After only 3 months, the difference is quite dramatic - the annoying curve in my lower teeth has completely flattened out, and the uppers are much more regular too. So I'm never discouraged - even with just the results I have so far it's been worth it. In another year or two this will all be a memory - but even now I wear my smile with more pride than I ever have in my life. At the end of the day I remind myself that if I don't do this I'll spend the rest of my life wondering what might have been. Actually having my front teeth meet when I chew: to most it's so ordinary, to me it's something too cool to even contemplate, and it's gonna happen! Can't wait for the surgery, still 9 months away. No longer will the dentists mutter 'class 2' when they see me... - P.S. I feel sorry for you guys in the States and your ridiculous hospital bills - over here in NZ the entire surgery will cost around $9000NZ - around $6000US. Anyone up for a holiday? Guest guest
Our enormous hospital and surgeon bills are a direct result of the ever increasing government control over health insurance. I would love to see a completely privatized system. I am interested, is health care government regulated in NZ? ~Cathy Re: Time to vent... > > But if it's really bugging you, you can opt out of it all, you know. > > Choice is up to you : ) > > > > > > To say I hate them doesn't even begin to describe how hateful I am > towards my beloved braces... Guest guest
> That's pretty cheap - > > But don't you have to pay taxes to finance the " single payer " system? > > Jay The cost of all the health services are redistributed over every tax payer in the province. So, in a sense, it becomes cheaper for everyone. And then, we have private insurance that covers for things that aren't, like my braces for example (I got 2500$ out of the 5600$ total cost). For my surgery, the 750$ only covered parts and pieces that were tailored for me, like the molds she took, the x-rays, etc. My private insurer paid for a private room at the hospital (but I took a semi-private room, I didn't feel I would need it). If you ask every citizen around here, they'll all tell you they rather pay more taxes than fight with their insurance company to get everything covered. They once talked about per usage fees of 5$ per visit to the hospital. They couldn't widthdraw the idea fast enough, there was a revolution going on! If I remember correctly, but I may be wrong on this, before petroleum was discovered in Alberta, I think you province benefited from the other provinces as well.. ;-) And if you re-read this thread, we're not " rubbing " against Americans. There was one fellow " gloating " about the cost of the surgery in New Zeland.., that's when it started. Ray
