Bisacodyl

Bisacodyl is a Stimulant Laxative. Stimulant laxatives encourage bowel movements by acting on the intestinal wall. They increase the muscle contractions that move along the stool mass 2. Results usually occur within six to twelve hours. Evacuation is soft to semi-fluid stool. Bisacodyl is enteric coated to protect the stomach from irritation. Bisacodyl is also available prepared as an enema or suppository. Bisacodyl & Docusate is a Combination Laxative and Stool Softener. Contraindications

Stimulant Laxative Precautions, Enema Precautions, and Suppository Precautions. Results slowed if taken with food. Do not take the tablets within an hour of (consuming) milk or antacids (may cause enteric coating to dissolve too quickly). Bisacodyl tablets should not be given to children up to 6 years of age or to persons who cannot swallow without chewing because as it may cause stomach irritation 1.

Warnings & Side Effects Reported in Medical Literature

Bisacodyl may cause stomach irritation if chewed or crushed 1. In older adults, if taken too often, it may worsen weakness, lack of coordination, or dizziness and lightheadedness. Side effects: Confusion, irregular heartbeat, muscle cramps, skin rash, and unusual tiredness or weakness. Less common side effects: belching, cramping, diarrhea, and nausea 2.
