Guest guest
Welcome back Deborah! I was just rereading this website to help answer a question someone had about atypical PD and found this mention about scanning. http://emedicine.com/NEURO/topic596.htm " In patients with parkinsonian syndromes unresponsive to dopamine agonists or levodopa, an imaging study is warranted. MRI of the brain is preferred to CT scan, as it allows better visualization of midbrain and brainstem structures. Presently, PET scans and SPECT scans remain research tools and are not used routinely in making the diagnosis. " I gathered that Dr. Lieberman is of the opinion that presently the routine use of PET and SPECT is not warranted in those who have a response to Sinemet (levadopa). Others disagree and I guess it will take a bit more research to convince them that these scans are useful in the majority of cases.
