Guest guest
Hi Guys! Several unrelated questions here. (I need my lower jaw advanced to fix an overbite) First, my Insurance company approved my surgery!! Yay!! But everything on the pre-auth forms shows that my surgery was in April, on a date before we even started the pre-auth process. My Surgeon's admin staff says not to worry about it, but I am.. Should I call the Insurance company? If so, how should I pose the question? I'm worried they might reverse their decision. Better to find out before I have the surgery though.. Second. I'm shooting for a surgery date around the end of August, I won't have the exact date until next week though. My 10 year high school reunion is going to be during the first week of October, and I'd really like to go. I've been living halfway across the country from where I grew up so I'm wondering -- after around 4 weeks after surgery will I feel up for a 3 hour flight home? How bad is the swelling/bruising after that amount of time and will I be able to talk by then? And Third. Is there a website I can go to that has liquid/soft food diet suggestions? I'm worried about what I'm going to be able to eat during recovery. I'm slightly lactose intolerant -- meaning, the closer to milk (and thus the higher lactose content) it is, the less I can handle it so no pre-made products containing milk or ice cream for me, and go figure, that's what everyone is telling me to eat. Ok, fourth... Does anyone have any experience with ice cream makers? I *can* drink Lactaid milk, and I've been toying with the idea of making my own ice cream. Would purchasing an ice cream maker be at all worthwhile? That's all I have for now. Thanks!! -Jen
Guest guest
Hi Jen - First, your surgeon's admin staff should be able to handle the insurance questions. That's what they are there for. If they say not to worry, everything is probably fine. If you are still worried, ask them to call. If you are only having lower jaw advancement using BSSO (that's what I had also) you should feel fine to travel at 4 weeks. I'm 4 weeks post-op tomorrow and I have been back to work for 2 weeks. I think most people have minimal swelling and no bruising at 4 weeks. Your speech should be pretty good considering you have a new jaw position and elastics. You may not feel quite up to playing your trumpet however. Now if your doctor plans to have you wired shut for 6 weeks that's a different story. I imagine you will not feel like traveling in that case. If, like me, you are only banded for a few days and then taking solid food, you'll feel better sooner. Check out the Links section of this website for lots of information, recipes, etc. Being lactose intolerant limits you somewhat. Hopefully you won't be on the liquid diet very long. Sorry but making ice cream never crossed my mind. Hope this helps, Jay > Hi Guys! > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
Flying really should be no problem: I flew 6 days after my surgery. Make sure you rest well before you take your flights. And make sure you swallow a lot during takeoff and landing since there might still be some swelling that could cause your ears to close. That happened with me somewhat, nothing serious. I really had no problems flying, and after 4 weeks it should definately be no problem. Nathalie > Hi Guys! > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
My doc sent the application when I first saw him, in March. The precertification was good, I'm thinking, for six months. Once we knew what the date would be, he applied again for renewal, which they sent promptly... Cammie > Hi Guys! > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
I am lactose intolerant too, and I found out that ensure has lactose free drinks. Boost might have some as well. They may very well ALL be lactose free, I just quickly browsed the shelves at the store. Did you know that lactaid makes ice cream? That might be easier, I know I probably won't feel like making my own ice cream after my surgery! Although it might give me something to do. There are other kinds of lactose free ice cream, but I live in Canada and I think Chapman's is only available here. Some of the soy ice cream is pretty good too. > Hi Guys! > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
Really?? I had no idea they made ice cream. I wonder if I could get it delivered.. They don't sell it in the grocery stores around here - - that I have ever seen.. I'm in the Denver area. I've tried the soy based ice creams and they're not bad, but nothing beats real ice cream made from real milk. I've never seen a lactose-free ice cream that had any real milk in it around here.. I'm sure I won't be up for all the work of making ice cream either, but I'm sure I could sweet talk someone into doing it for me until I'm up for doing it myself. Thanks for your response!! And thanks to everyone else for their responses as well! I'll be talking to my surgeon's office next week to get everything scheduled. I can't wait to finally get this over and done with. -Jen > > Hi Guys! > > > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
My surgery is on Sept. 15th ~ I'm having my lower jaw set back and upper advanced, so it's a little different from yours but it's good to know someone else might be miserable with me:) Have you ever taken lactaid tablets/pills? They work pretty well for me ~ esp. the extra strength ones. I have heard of ppl crushing them up and taking them with the first sip of milk/ice cream. I've never tasted them crushed up before, but I assume they're probably like TUMS and kind of chalky/don't have much taste. You might want to try using them before the surgery to see how many you need ~ you can take 1-4 at one time, right now I stick to 2 or 3, although if I were to try this after my surgery I might take 4 to be safe! It can get kind of expensive using that many though:) Good luck talking to the surgeon and getting your surgery date! I am anxious to get this done too. > > > Hi Guys! > > > > > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
I have used the lactaid pills, but I actually had to take them as I eat thoughout the meal (taking 6 at a time sometimes), and it didn't seem to always work. My lactose intolerance was actually caused by a bacterial intentestinal infection that I didn't know I had until I thought I was completely intolerant for several years -- gotta love doctors that aren't thorough, they thought for those years that I just had IBS or something, they never actually tested me for an infection until my symptoms were aggravated by antibiotics I was taking for a sinus infection. Once I was diagnosed and treated I'm able to tolerate anything that the label says has 4 or less sugars on it now (milk I think says 12, ouch)-- which means I'm back to being ok with cream cheese and sour cream and such, but there was permanent damage to the glands that produce lactase so that's about as good as I'll ever get. Not that I'm complaining, it's worlds better than it used to be! I haven't tried again since, but I remember that even if I took a couple pills with every other bite or so of ice cream I'd still react pretty bad. Maybe I should give it another go that way too now that I'm not as intolerant as I once was. Once I tried actually crushing the pills and mixing it with my ice cream and then letting it sit for a while -- in the freezer -- it turned to complete liquid and was not at all appetizing. It did the same thing to cream cheese, too. I read somewhere that Lactaid comes in liquid form and is available in Canada this way, but I don't recommend mixing it into anything that isn't already supposed to be a liquid when you start with it. I don't recommend chewing the tablets unless you get the chewables.. the regular pills taste kinda like rotten milk to me, it's disgusting. The chewable ones taste much better. -Jen > My surgery is on Sept. 15th ~ I'm having my lower jaw set back and > upper advanced, so it's a little different from yours but it's good > to know someone else might be miserable with me:) > > Have you ever taken lactaid tablets/pills? Guest guest
Run this one by your doc, of course, but our gastroenterologist allows his patients to drink Ensure when they're otherwise on a clear liquid diet in prep for that infamous test (which wasn't really so bad, after all). That leads me to think that Ensure does not contain any milk... Lots of good nutrition, but no milk. Cammie > > Hi Guys! > > > > Several unrelated questions here. Guest guest
I know that Miz Fiddlesticks will hit the roof when she reads this.... But Martha sure made making ice cream look easy with one of those gizmos with the cannister that you freeze. (Donghia, or something that sounds like that?) Didn't look much more complicated than opening a can, actually... Cammie > > > Hi Guys! > > > > > > Several unrelated questions here. Lactaid pills, taken before the meal, are still the best choice. For me that is. Ray

Guest guest
We bought a Cuisinart ice-cream maker and checked it out months before surgery (it works well, but don't try to make frozen mousse in it, it doesn't work and makes a terrible mess). Unfortunately with all the hubbub post-op, we never used it. Eventually I just went shopping in the freezer section and bought all kinds of great flavours of ice cream. We've used it since, but we are not big ice cream eaters, so I think it just may be gifted to my brother who has young children. > > > > > Hi Guys! > > > > > > > > > > Several unrelated questions here.
