Guest guest
Before we hired full-time help for Ken, I did use someone for five days when I returned to Minnesota for a High School Reunion. I hired her privately and she was highly recommended, but first, I talked to several Nursing Homes, all of which would have taken him. I did pay privately, but there are organizations such as PRO and your local Caregiver's Organization that can help with the payment if necessary. Guest guest
My 17 yr. old would like to go look at colleges for next year. Last year his dad was able to go see one college with him but this year that is impossible if the school is not in driving distance. Since we live in Arizona, schools in the East are not driving distance for a weekend trip. Jerry (MSA) can not be left alone and although we have friends who could spend time during the day with him, an overnight would not be possible. Has anyone used short term respite care? If so, where did you look? How did you find out about what if anything your insurance would cover? Does anyone have any other creative ideas? My son would gladly go by himself but I don't feel good about a 17 yr. old wandering around the East Coast alone. He would also like me to go with him. I think he needs time alone with me where our primary focus is on him and not on caring for his dad. This is one great kid who lovingly provides care for his dad whenever he can. His dad will really miss him when he goes off to college but dad also wants him to be able to see the schools so he can make good decisions for his future. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jan
Guest guest
Jan, others on the list may have more information on respite care options, but I can tell you that in Indiana some of the Area Agencies on Aging operate and/or fund respite care programs - although I think they tend to be more " day time care " than around the clock care. And in my hometown, our hospital is building a facility for exactly what you describe - short term respite stays. Or if you will, a short-term assisted living facility. Have you contacted an assisted living facility near you to see if they offer short-term admissions? Guest guest
Thanks Jerry, I will make some calls. I just started thinking about this last night when my son said he would like to look at a couple schools in the D.C. area. Thank you for the suggestion of the Assisted Living facilities. I honestly didn't know where to start. jan > Jan, others on the list may have more information on respite care > options, but I can tell you that in Indiana some of the Area Agencies on > Aging operate and/or fund respite care programs - although I think they > tend to be more " day time care " than around the clock care. > > And in my hometown, our hospital is building a facility for exactly what > you describe - short term respite stays. Guest guest
Jan, I don't have any information or ideas about care for Jerry where you could go with your son but I do have one offer. Your son is more than welcome to stay here with us in Charlotte if he wants to look at schools in this area. I am positive that would be willing to go with him to these schools and I would help go over the info with him... having a 10 year history with higher education... prior to retirement. I'm sure that there are others here on this list, in various parts of the country including the East cost that would be willing to make the same offer as I have. Guest guest
Jan, I have a friend from church whose mother owns a company that I believe is called " Home Instead. " They go into homes and do things for people who don't want to go into a home. They do everything from cooking to errand running as well as patient care. I will find out the phone number from my friend. She operates out of the Mesa area and goes all over the valley. They are on a lot of the lists at the hospitals for those who need help. This may be an answer for you. We would definitely use them for my dad if the need comes up. I would think that this might be a good option for you if you are interested. IF ANY OF THE UNIVERSITIES ARE IN CLEVELAND, THEN PLEASE STOP BY OUR HOME. WE WOULD BE GLAD HELP OUT WHERE HELP IS NEEDED. I HAVE A HANDICAPPED VAN WITH A LIFT. ANOTHER POSSIBILITY IS CONTACT THE SUPPORT GROUP LEADER AND SEE IF THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO HELP U AND UR HUSBAND. THE SCHOOLS WE LOOKED AT WERE THE FOLLOWING; NORTHWESTERN IN CHGO., UNIVERSITY OF CHGO., WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, CASE WESTERN UNIVERSITY IN CLEVELAND, UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER AND ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. HOW DID WE DO IT?? WE FLEW TO ST. LOUIS TRIP 1 TRIP 2 WE DROVE TO UR AND RIT AND STAYED AT THE HAMPTON INN. WE INFORM THE UNIVERSITIES IN DETAIL WHAT I NEEDED. THE HANDICAPPED/DISABLED SERVICE HELPED 1000%!!! - REQURED A HOTEL -REQUIRED A WHEELCHAIR AND A STUDENT TO PUSH IT -REQUIRED PARKING DIRECTLY BEHIND WHEREVER I HAD TO GO ON CAMPUS,BECAUSE I CAN'T BE LEFT ALONE TRIP 3 I STAYED AT THE HOTEL IN EVANSTON, WHILE MY HUSBAND AND SON VISITED UNIV.. OF CHGO. MY SISTER CAME WITH MY NIECES TO VISIT. NORTHWESTERN --RAMPS WERE BROKEN AND NO STUDENT TO HELP US MY FATHER AND HUSBAND WENT THERE. CASE WESTERN AND UR WERE A GODSEND!! THE RAMPS, DOORS, ECT. WORKED. WASH UNIV WAS GOOD ALSO, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS CWRU AND UR ********** QUESTION-- 1)WHAT UNIVERSITIES ARE U INTERESTED IN?? MY HUSBAND IS A PROF AT A UNIVERSITY SO WE MAY BE ABLE TO HELP COORDINATE A VISIT WITH SOME UNIVERSITIES. 2)DO U HAVE FAMILY IN ANY OF THE SCHOOLS UR SON IS INTERESTED IN?? THEY CAN WATCH UR HUSBAND AT THE HOTEL. UR HUSBAND CAN VISIT AFTER U DO THE SCHOOL TOUR, SO HE CAN FEEL LIKE A PART OF THE SENDING OFF ONES CHILD TO COLLEGE. Since > we live in Arizona, schools in the East are not driving distance for > a weekend trip. CAN THE FRIENDS COME TO THE HOTEL THAT U GUYS ARE STAYING AT?? I AM SURE THEY CAN:) Has anyone used short term respite > care? If so, where did you look? My son would gladly go by himself but I don't feel > good about a 17 yr. old wandering around the East Coast alone. HAHAHAHA I GOT THE SAME OFFER FROM MY SON. HE WOULD HAVE LOVED TO GO OFF BY HIMSELF. UNIVERSITIES HAVE STAYOVERS. TEAMED UP WITH ANTHER COLLEGE STUDENT. MAKE SURE U EXPLAIN TO THE UNIVERSITY WHAT U NEED. I FOUND EMAIL TO BE THE BEST MODE OF COMMUNICATION, THEY ARE VERY UNDERSTANDING. He > would also like me to go with him. I think he needs time alone with > me where our primary focus is on him and not on caring for his dad. YES TRUE. OUR SON SPENDS TIME WITH ME, OR HIS DAD, OR THE 3 OF US DO SOMETHING. I BELIEVE OUR SON NEEDS TIME AWAY FROM BOTH OF US. THE ILL PARENT AND THE HEALTHY PARENT. HE NEEDS TO BE WITH OTHER KIDS. OHHHH!! HIRE AN AIDE TO COME WITH. OR MORE AFFORDABLE IS TELL THE UNIVERSITY U NEED SOMEONE TO PUSH UR HUSBAND AROUND ON CAMPUS. MANY UNIVERSITIES PROVIDE FREE TRANSPORTATION FROM CERTAIN HOTELS TO THE CAMPUS ALSO. > This is one great kid who lovingly provides care for his dad whenever > he can. HE SOUNDS LIKE OUR KID TOO:) OUR SON'S FATHER CRIED. I CRIED AFTER WE CAME BACK HOME. His dad will really miss him when he goes off to college but > dad also wants him to be able to see the schools so he can make good > decisions for his future. So any suggestions would be greatly > appreciated. I HOPE HIS DAD GETS TO GO WITH EVEN IF HE DOESN'T SEE THE CAMPUS. JUST DRIVING THERE OR FLYING TO THE UNIVERSITIES MADE ME FEEL A PART OF LETTING MY SON GO. U ARE WELCOME TO TALK TO ME OR MY HUSBAND. WE WENT THRU THIS 'HOW CAN NANCY PARTAKE LIKE OTHER MOMS? AT THE SAME TIME HAVE MY SON FEEL AND BE THE FOCUS OF THE DAY AS OPPOSE TO ME. SINCERELY, N. Guest guest
Jan, I just have to add my 2 cents worth in here.. The Colleges that are surounding Charlotte North Carolina are the following, DUKE, UNC-CHARLOTTE - CHAPEL HILL, CLEMSOM, USC SPARTANBURG S.C., to just name a few. I dont know if your son plays sports but most of these are big time colleges's for sports. I would be more than happy to make appointments and go with him to interview or with you as well if that is possible, Please let me know if I or We can be of any assistance. Need less to say, Room and Board is not a option, it's absolutly FREE... GOT IT ????? !!!!!
