I went to the OS today for the first time post-op since the surgery

(im 9 days post-op) and i have a small infection in the back of my

mouth due to bad brushing back there on the left side. He is

doubling my dosage of antibiotic which will hopefully help. it is

swollen and he made two new stitches because food got trapped behind

my cheek and into the wound...he said thee was some puss. Now

honestly, I'm very scared. I'm seeing him again on Monday. I

thought i was brushing well..i brushed 5x/day, always after eating,

always! I'm really hoping it does not get worse because he told me

that if it does i could loose that part of my jaw and they will have

to take part of my hip to exchange the bone! that really scared me!

question- when you rinse while brushing, it's very hard for me..how

do you guys do it?

I'm just very scared and frustrated and nervous right now, anything

will help, thanks.

After I brush I fill a zip-n-squeeze bag with warm ater and use it

like a very gentle water pick. Then i rinse with an alcohol free

mouth wash. Hope this helps.

Hey Meryl,

Here.. we had surgery on the same day. I was wondering how

you were doing.. I'm sorry to hear you have an infection. Try

sticking to just liquids, and get a child's tooth brush. I still

can't feel my gums, so I feel a lot better knowing I don't have to

worry about hitting them with the little toothbrush. I also got a

huge bottle of saline solution (salt water) from the hospital before

I left, and I swish with it whenever I think about it (which is

pretty often). Its amazing how fast gums will heal up with salt

water. Good luck

A few things will help :

- With your surgeon's approval, get a Waterpik machine, and use it

at the LOWEST setting. Talk to him first, though, some disaprove

this machine. I used it with lukewarm water.

- I used a syringe to push the salted water (saline solution) to the

back of my mouth. Do the same. And if you've been prescribed

Perydex (medicated mouthwash), use it.

- Once the salted water is in your mouth, and if you're not too dizzy,

try to make it run throught your entire mouth (incline your head

if you can't use your mouth's muscles).

- Use the syringe as often as you can think of it. A bare minimum

would be after each meal, immediately after waking up in the

morning (or after a nap), and before going to bed (at night

bacterias are most likely spreading because they are pretty much

left alone in there!)

- I used to complete each meal with a glass of water (tap water), while

the food didn't have the time to stick anywhere. Seconds after the last

bite (or drink), I would rinse my mouth with water.

- I have a piece of cheek blocking the natural access to my wisdom

teeth (each side, lucky me!). So, I used a finger to *gently* strech my

cheek open to free the back of my lower jaw, while (whit the other

hand), injecting the salter water with the syringe.

All this got me out of the " no-brushing " period with an A+ (I was

congratulated of the state of my mouth by my surgeon).

Hope this helps...
