Anemia Anyone?

I kinda made reference to this in another posting, but figured I'd

get a better response if I posted it seperately.

Was reviewing my Mayo test results last night, when I noted 3

separate indicators of anemia. This is probably why the neuro at

Mayo said I had " Anemia of Chronic Disease - but we don't know what

the chronic disease is. "

Although he told me this in the presence of others, and the test

results show this (again, I'm no doc - but I do have some rather

detailed medical training) there is nothing in his report about it.

Anyway, curious about others. Anyone else have problems with

Anemia? Oddly enough, I have no defficiencies in B vitamins or the

like - all much more complex than that - of course :-)

My husband was recently told by his new doctor that he has anemia. When the

doctor checked his chart he realized that he's had it since 1999 but nothing was

ever done about it! I'm now waiting for results of a second round of tests

trying to determine the cause of the anemia. After the doctor figures that out,

we can begin some type of treatment. I will share the results with you if you'd

like.

and Beth,

At the risk of over emphasizing a point made on several other ocassions

on this list, a particularly relevant issue regarding anemia is

pernicious anemia or vitamin b12 deficiency. If you look PA up, you

will find that it can (untreated) lead to significant neurological

symptoms, including some that closely resemble the ataxias. I'm sure

though that a competent physician will be aware of this and treat the

condition accordingly IF the anemia referred to in your reports is PA,

but thought it worth mentioning anyway.

Several members of my family have had PA, including my grandmother and

my mother. My mother takes monthly B12 injections to treat her PA and

has no symptoms and was lucky to have started treatment early enough to

avoid permanent neurological damage from the PA. During the early tests

given in an attempt to diagnose my brother's neurological symptoms it

was discovered that he is also b12 deficient although he has not been

clinically diagnosed as having PA. He does take monthly b12 injections

for the deficiency and that does not resolve any of his MSA symptoms.

Jerry Cash
