Hey guys! New here, this is only my second message. I'm 13 days

post op and feeling pretty good. My OS is nice enough to not use

elastics on his patients until a week after surgery, but now I'm in

them and I don't like them very much. I have a sort of a

problem...I'm 17 and I'm going to be a senior next year...I've been

in my school's marching band for 3 years now. My OS says I can't

play trumpet until at LEAST August 28, eight weeks after surgery, but

who knows, it could be longer. I'm in the marching band and playing

trumpet there will probably be a considerable amount of pressure on

my jaw. I like band but wouldn't be devastated if I had to not do it

this year if it was in the best interest of my jaw. I'll talk to my

OS but I was just wondering if anyone had any advice. Thanks a bunch!

Hi I play trombone. I am 9 weeks post op & was given the go-ahead to

start practising again just after 7 weeks. I have not tried yet

though as my jaw still moves slightly & I can feel this. I spoke to

ortho who said I can still try to play, but it doesn't feel right

yet. I'm thinking of trying this week so I'll let you know how it

goes. If you let the band leader know I'm sure they would let you

join in later in the year. I wouldn't push yourself too much.

I play alto saxophone and I march too. It's not brass, but I think

we have the same rules. I think the amount of time you can't play

depends on what procedure you had done. I had upper, lower, and

genioplasty, and I am not allowed to play for 3 months. I had a

friend who only had lower, and he was back playing after 6 weeks.

I have a deal worked out with the director that I will learn the

drills and just pretend to play for the first part of the season.

You might want to talk to your director too. Mine has been very

understanding.

Thanks Luke and for the advice. =) I don't know if there are

technical terms for this but basically they fractured my upper jaw

and moved it up, broke my lower jaw and repositioned it because it

was out of alignment and also broke my chin and aligned it with the

rest of my face. They secured everything with about seven titanium

plates and screws. (I wonder if that will set off metal detectors...)

Oh yeah, they also took out my wisdom teeth while I was in surgery.

So will the fact that I had both jaws operated on affect the amount

of time I will have to take off do you think? I'll talk to my OS the

next time I see him.

Your surgery sounds alot like mine, except for the wisdom teeth

part. I think it does make a difference if you had both jaws done, I

will ask when I go to see my OS on thursday and we can compare notes.

Just to let you know that I have been practising my trombone for a

week now - only 10 - 15 mins a day at the moment. Tonight I sat in

on a gig & it went ok. I only played a couple of tunes. It feels

quite strange and my sound is not as good as before but that is to

be expected - still wearing surgical wires with hooks so its not so

comfortable. Hopefully braces coming off quite soon. Anyway just

thought I would let you know & hope your recovery is going well.

Hay...not a brass player, but a flute/picolo player...and can't wait

to get the tin off and be post-op (8/9). I give you props for playing

at les than a 2wks...that's amazing. Doesn't teh buzz REALLY tingle

your recovery areas?

I think this is one of those things though that you just need to feel

out. If the dr says ok about the pressures then I say ROCK ON and

just remember the long term is always more impt.

What kind of a band are you in?

To Jo (jfloweroflifet) I am almost 11 weeks post op - wasn't sure if

you thought it was me who is 2 weeks post op. Doesn't tingle at all -

most of numbness has gone. Just need to get wires & brackets off. I

play in mainly big bands & function bands. Bet you can't wait to get

braces off - not long for you now.

Yeah I though 11 days...

I can't wait for all of it...actually I played for YEARS, then had to

drop it in college-conflicted and then less time meant less playing...

now yrs later, my best fr still plays and we're going to start

playing together, maybe " do something with it " maybe just enjoy the

music...I miss it SOOOO much and didn't want to start up again while

in braces-no need to learn an new embouchure when I will only have to

do it again w/o them...so ReALLY can't wait!!!
