How's your bite now?

Hi Marco,

I say my OD 5wks post op to the day (July 7th). She removed my surgical

wires and replace them with regular wires. I am also sporting rubber bands on

my

back molars on both sides to close my bite. I have to wear these continously

and change them out three to four times a day. The rest of my teeth seem to

meeting up okay so far. I just go with the flow. My OD is a perfectionist . .

.. so no telling what configuration I'll be in in a month from now. Good luck

with your OD appointment.

With regards,

Dale

I'm 4 weeks post op. I've not had any ortho treatment since my

surgery. My OS recommended at least 5 weeks before I start ortho

treatment again.

For those that have had surgery I wanted to know how is your bite?

When did you feel like it was 100%?

As for me, my bite sucks :) All my teeth are touching. But, they

are not making proper contact. I feel several of my teeth touching

on the outsides because their slanted inwards a bit.

I'd be very curious to hear what you guys have to say.

I'm also curious about this --

My teeth have not connected properly since my braces went on, they

typically only connect on the edges, and mostly only on one side, and

it's the worst the day after an adjustment. My surgery isn't for at

least another month yet, should I expect more of the same from my bite

until long after the surgery?

Total number of teeth : 31 (missing one wisdom... boohoohoo..!)

Prior to surgery : 10 teeth touching (outer bottom touches inner top

teeth). Only 3 teeth are able to chew solid food, if cut in very small

pieces.

Post surgery : 24 teeth touching, 20 teeth are fully functional,

one full side (left) could chew (if only my surgeon would

allow me..!! hehe!)

I was given the ok to continue ortho treatment. Saw the doctor last

Thursday, he refused to do anything untill the 10th week. That, along

with his very busy schedule, has set me back to Aguust the 18th. He

wouldn't even remove my surgical hooks, or the surgical wires. I

have to keep all the hardware (I hate it!).

Expected end of treatment : March 2005.

Times he lied so far : 3

Chances he'll be on target : less than 25%

My own estimate for brace removal : June 2005

Times I lied to myself : 0

;-)

Seriously, the new bite is really far better than the old one, only

some teeth are " bumping " into each other, so I have to be very

carefull in chewing (go slow, take in less). Nothing too serious.

Marco -

4 weeks after surgery I realized none of my back teeth met. Couldn't

tell until then because of all the swelling and numbnes. My upper

back molars were tilted in and everything seemed screwed up and

hopeless until I went for my first ortho adjustment at about 5 weeks.

Things really started to move and shift fast. I still have 4 rubber

bands that are pulling my bottom teeth up to meet the tops. For about

2 weeks it was really rough - my cheeks were getting caught, they were

raw and bleeding. Finally at 8 weeks after surgery I could really

feel the difference. I am now 10 weeks and I'm sitting here eating

Lucky Charms straight out of the box - no milk. Whopee!

Anyway, ask your ortho about the plan to fix your bite, I;m sure once

the adjustment starts you'll be amazed.

Ray:

I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy reading your posts.

You are very thorough when you explain your situation. Just one

last question for you (maybe), can you see the immediate result of

your upper teeth after you had your upper jaw implant?

Thanks again.

Good luck with your recovery!

Yikes! I have yet to have my surgery, and right now only 2 of my

teeth are touching on my left side since I had my wisdom teeth out a

few weeks ago, and it's basically just the edges so I hope it's

different post-op! I am living off of mushy spaghetti and other soft

foods, so I cannot wait to get this done! I hope most ppl have a

basic working bite post-op, I don't know if I could stand months and

months of readjusting before I can eat regular foods again!

If you mean cosmetically, yes, indeed! For the first time in 37 years

(I'm 37 years old...), I was able to see my upper teeth! I mean, when

I talk, when I smile (smiling... a first for me!). My speech has changed,

I can't really nail down what's different. I had a very good diction

before, but I'd say.. it's even better.

If you mean eating, I've tried them (don't tell it to my surgeon!..), and

I can tell you I will need learning. A lot. I never was able to use them

because the lower jaw would close far behind my upper teeth (in the

palate).

See this image :

http://www.pbase.com/image/31109164

On this picture, I'm not smiling, I'm only slightly opening my lips.

Notice the swelling has begun to disappear... Just slightly, but still,

joy oh joy!!

Thanks Hannah!

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I hope it's the same for

me :)

Unfortunately it's probably going at least a couple months

till after the surgery until you get a normal bite back.

It's a slow and frustrating process. But at the end of the day it's

worth it. And I'm sure you'll be very happy you did it.
