Guest guest
Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment. I'm expecting the OD to remove the surgical hooks and wires and replace them with something to start fine tuning my bite. I also expect I'll end up with some rubber bands to start bringing my teeth together where they don't yet touch. The only concern I have is since I'm only two weeks and two days post op, how much do I have to worry about the pressure they put on my jaw causing it to rebreak? I figure I can get in there well enough to floss, so I should be OK with the opening width, but I'm a little nervous about the ortho aid pushing down on my jaw and either rebreaking it, or just causing enough pain to send me back to Vicodin. Has anyone had their wires changed so soon after surgery and can you tell me how it went? Dammit
Guest guest
I was two weeks and one day with my first visit back to the Ortho. I asked about seeing him so soon, and he said that it was best to get in there and have him look and add elastics if needed. I did have a few brackets that came off that I didn't even know about, so I was glad to get that fixed before my teeth got too out of alignment. ~Cathy First Post Op OD Appointment Tomorrow Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment. Guest guest
Yes I went to the ortho two weeks post-op. He removed some of my surgical hooks but not all. He gave me " Ram " elastics. One elastic formed a box around teeth 4-6, upper and lower. The other elastic goes from the lower 6 to the upper 2. This is on both sides. He wanted to put the elastics on my 7's but didn't because he thought my stitches might get irritated. The next time I go, he'll no doubt change the elastics configuration. The good news is, my jaw didn't break. The bad news is, the pain was excruciating. As soon as he put the elastics on, I knew it was going to be rough. Later that night I had the really bad tooth pain you get from a big-time orthodontic adjustment. I had to hammer myself with my remaining tylenol/codeine syrup just so I could sleep. The next morning was much better. They will probably not press hard on your jaw, only put in some elastics. You'll be saying, " hello, Vicodin! Guest guest
Dammit, I am going back just at the three week mark and have been thinking about the same things. I was given permission at my 2 week OS visit to make an appt for the " next week " , it just so happened that they could not fit me in until this Friday, thereby making it a full 3 weeks from surgery. the whole pain thing from the adjustment is making me a bit nervous. i have always been able to manage a small space in my bite even with the 5 elastics and worry that if the new OD adjustment is too tight i won't be able to get my Advil in there. OUCHY. Let us know how that visit goes. > Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment. Guest guest
I saw my orthodontist 6 days after my surgery. This was because he needed to start expanding my upper jaw with the expander. Usually, you would do that yourself, but because I also had lower advancement and genio, I could hardly open my mouth so I really needed him to activate the expander. The first time he turned the expander was really scary: I had a feeling he was pushing my lower jaw way down! I almost started crying because I thought he was making me relapse or something. But every day for 5 days he expanded and it became a little easier every day. On the last day, he also but very light wires on the top front teeth, I did not feel any pressure of this. I also got a few elastics. I am now 4 weeks post-op today and everything looks perfectly in place, the lower jaw is where it is supposed to be according to my surgeon (I am officially without elastics as of today!), so that is a great relief! So don't worry about 'rebreaking', if my jaw could withstand the expander pushing down, it can definately withstand wire replacement. And of course, talk to your ortho, tell him your specific situation and I'm sure he'll handle you with extra care. I will see my ortho again on the 31st of july, he was already mentioning using new elastics to get my lower molars to come up that are tipped in right now...he also did not want to remove my surgical hooks because he had 'his reasons'. I'm sure those reasons had something to do with those nasty elastics...One thing I am looking forward to is that I really hope he's going to close my hockey playing gap between my 2 front teeth! I don't care if that'll hurt, I want it gone!!It will be Advil for me! Nathalie > Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment. Guest guest
Well , I'm back from my OD. MY OD was surprised to see me, and a little tentative about doing any work on me, but I assured him that this is the way my OS wanted it, and when he figured out I was feeling 100% and up for whatever he could do to get me out of the surgical hooks, we went for it. I was surprised at how much they did. It was nearly a two hour appointment. First, off came the surgical hooks and wires, and one broken bracket. I then was able to do a really good brushing and flossing. Man, that felt good! Then, I got a full set of x-rays and about a gazillion pictures. I think they even took more than they did when I first got my braces on! LOL... Back in the chair I got a new set of wires top and bottom after the broken bracket was replaced. My OD was surprised that after two surgeries there was only one that popped off. The part that I was most concerned about was obviously the lower wire. The assistant was even more nervous than I was, especially after she had to nearly stand on my chest and push until she was shaking to get the top wire in. When it was time for the bottom wire, she measured it, then went to the back and ground down the ends so it would go through the brackets easier. That helped tremendously, but she still had to push a bit to get it in place. I ended up asking her to stop a couple of times because of the pressure, but my jaw held up fine. The end of the procedure ended up with me getting power chains top and bottom, along with a new set of elastics. I'm now the proud owner of triangle shaped elastics on both sides with a manatee on the package. All in all, it wasn't too bad. I think it was Marco who predicted I'd be back on the Vicodin. No such need, but 4 ibuprofen before my visit surely helped. The best news is that now that I'm free of the surgical hooks, I won't be picking my SOFT CHEW out of the wires tomorrow when I get to start chewing!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Question, If you were wired up til today...then how did you get in there to floss? I have been told if I am wired 6 or banded 3 I will not be able to open at all the entire time. ?? hmm, very curious, Jo AND congrats on another step forward!! > > > Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment. Guest guest
I was only banded shut before today. The wires that came off were the surgical heavy duty wires with the surgical hooks attached. Guest guest
Oh, yeah! I forgot to mention, the sooner you go back to the OD, the sooner the surgical hooks come off! That was so wonderful for me! And brushing... Uh... you can just imagine... Yeah, I was glad to see my OD if only for that! Re: First Post Op OD Appointment Tomorrow Well , I'm back from my OD. Guest guest
Dammit, Big, huge, WOW...... ALmost 2 hours, you have me freaking out. Great great advice on the Advil or Tylenol prior to appt. I have to say that i ahve been doing that prior to my OS appt too. They scheduled me tomorrow at the OD for 4:40 so i kind of hope that i will not be there very long. i THINK that this visit will be to get the elastics going to bring one side of my bite together. I never imagined them chaning wires yet. Hey, don't they have to use those surgical wire hooks to attach the elastics? How did you get away with getting rid of them then? What type of schedule did you end up on with OD? In other words, when do you have to see him again? You sound like such a trooper. I see OS and OD tomorrow. (Kind of) looking forward to it > > > Tomorrow I have my first post-op ortho appointment.
