Guest guest
I am new to this group. My 17 year old son will be having lower jaw surgery in December. He will have had his braces on for 18 months. I am now getting the referral for insurance through(Aetna) and trying to get everything lined up way before his surgery. I understand that this is typcially denied a few times before approved. Any pointers anyone can give me would be helpful! I thought maybe I was jumping the gun a little and starting too early, but I guess not by all of the messages that have been posted!
Guest guest
No way are you starting too early. But do ask a lot of questions about whether your surgeon is... If youngsters (and especially male youngsters) have this surgery before their growth is complete, the growth spurts may undo all the corrections, and make a second operation necessary. It is my understanding (and I am only a lay person here) that men finish their growth usually later than women do, and that sometimes it continues into their 20s. It is also my understanding that an x-ray of the bones in the hand can be helpful in the determination. In no way am I trying to undermine what your docs have told you. But I am suggesting that you be very careful on this territory, and ask the questions before, rather than after, the surgery. Cammie > I am new to this group. Guest guest
I agree- get the insurance stuff out of the way as soon as possible. It was the day before I was supposed to have surgery and mine still wasn't approved by insurance, so we had to postpone it. And then of course, the insurance approved it two days later. I also agree about the age thing- I'm 17 too, but then I'm a girl, and like Cammie said, girls stop growing sooner. (I've been the same height for like 3 years. lol) But in your case, I would definitely ask about that. What kind of lower jaw surgery is your son having? I had my lower jaw moved back,to correct my VERY bad underbite, and my lower wisdom teeth removed, because they were in the way of the surgery and needed to be taken out anyway. 3 weeks later, I'm very happy with the results. Good luck with your son's surgery, I'm sure it will go great. > > I am new to this group. My 17 year old son will be having lower > jaw > > surgery in December. Guest guest
My son hasn't grown any within the past 2 years. That is a really good point. He had his widom teeth pulled last august. His surgery is pulling his jaw out-he has a bad overbite. He is currently in braces - 18 months now. The orthodontist said he would need to have the surgery at the 2 year mark - so Christmas break from school works out. That way he doesn't miss much of school. He is a senior this year and that concerned me. This way he has 3 weeks of recovery time before he has to go back to school. He is so funny - he says after the braces and the surgery, he will be a big time stud! The girls won't be able to keep their hands off of him! > > > I am new to this group.
