Guest guest
I was reading over some surgery confirmation papers I got in the mail yesterday and noticed that for my lower jaw(I think it's my lower jaw), there was something that said bone graft. Isn't this where they like cut into your hip and take a piece of bone to put in your jaw??? i've heard this is quite painful post-op. i think i'll have enough to deal with without more pain...and another incision!! Guest guest
Ask your surgeon... Some bone grafts are done with bone from the hip. Others are done with bone from the mouth, or other parts of your body... Your doc can tell you for sure. For what it's worth, your doc will be able to advise best about the healing. Most folks have indeed said that the hip is more painful than the mouth, when there's a graft from there. Best I can remember, the biggest troubles were having to walk with a cane for a while, and not being able to get the hip incision wet (as in a bath) for a while, until you get surface healing. But hey -- most folks have also said that they do not have a lot of pain in the jawbones. And in any case, your doc can give you whatever painkillers you need. Just stay in touch, and keep letting him/her and the staff know what's going on for you. I couldn't sleep on either side. I was permitted to sleep on etheir side, as per my surgeon, only it hurt so much when I did... I was back on my back. That lasted 2 weeks. Walking with a cane is not a big problem. You get use to. The no-wet thing is the most irritating issue. You can take a shower, but you need to isolate the scar with something to prevent water from getting there. I used Hypafix and Saran Wrap (got to be imaginative!) and it worked fine. Only it took me 15 minutes preparation time to take a 5 minutes shower... hahaha! The pain was totally gone 4 weeks after the surgery, and is worst at day #1 (in other words, it only gets better after the surgery). The other option was synthetic bones, but the surgeon said she would have to check after opening me. Unfortunately, that option did work out for me.
