Guest guest
I can open my mouth wide enough to eat soft, mushy foods and everytime i put food in my mouth and i close my jaw i end up biting my lip. The really sad part is i cant feel it. I bit so hard today it bled. I started using a mirror but it doesnt help that much because as soon as someone catches my attention away from the mirror while im eating i most likely bite my lip. Will this get better? Does anyone have any advice for me to help prevent this?
Guest guest
I had a really hard time as well even with a mirror. I finally gave up on using any kind of utensils and started eating with my fingers. If I can pick it up and shove it in the opening I can eat it now. Since you can't feel a spoon with your lips it helps to feel your lips with your fingers. I've eaten fish, scrambled eggs, ground meat mashed potatoes. Just push it in your mouth and keep your fingers on your lips til they are closed. My belly's been full since I realized this. It's not a pretty site though so I usually eat alone! Guest guest
My problem is I keep biting my tongue. It's not in the same place it was before surgery, and it keeps getting it the darn way! Guest guest
Marsha, are you able to chew or given the permission to chew? I thought it was interesting what you said about getting the food in with your fingers, but are you chewing it or just swallowing it? i am banded with only 5 bands, but am still blending and drinking. the OS has not given me permission to chew though he has given me permission to slide things like fried eggs or ground fish down. i tried and i'd rather drink. there was JUNK everywhere in my braces after tyring that! katie > > I can open my mouth wide enough to eat soft, mushy foods and > > everytime i put food in my mouth and i close my jaw i end up biting > > my lip. Guest guest
I am on a no chew diet, I am banded with about a 1 finger opening. I kind of smush it on the roof of my mouth and then swallow. I can't live on the liguid diet any more, swallowing very small pieces takes a long time but it makes me feel like I really ate. Also the flavor is different when you add liquid to blend and I prefer the true flavor of a food. I went to a childrens party yesterday and had a cheese burger (cut up into a million pieces , no bun) deviled eggs, macaroni salad, cake and ice cream. I was messier than most of the kids, but I was a happy camper. Yes it takes me about 30 minutes to clean my mouth out afterwards, but it is worth it for me. I usually do this for 2 meals a day and stick to liquids for my other meal and snacks. Guest guest
I had that problem too. Also biting the inside of my cheek. It does get better, but you probably won't want to know that I bit my lower lip for many months post-op. I think I found that it was usually eating certain things, food would get trapped between outer lower lip and braces/teeth, and for some reason, that seemed to pull the lip in, and I bit it. So maybe you can think about what you were eating when it happens and that might help. That and don't bite down too hard unless you are sure what you are chewing on! I still do occasionally bite my lower lip at almost 2 months post-op, but probably no more frequently than any other normal person (my husband bites his occasionally too). Hope that helps,
