Guest guest
Hi ladies... Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so here goes! I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the patch? They say it's the way to go. Why risk smashing it up and missing some of it...and going off all together is not something I want to do now, not for sexual reasons, but for MY body and mind. Last time I had surg like this, there was a gap for the little pill to get thru and now, there better NOT be I just popped a patch on last nt and it's ok I guess...kinda imperfect but thinking better in the long run when I can't open at all. Any suggestions with this thing...I can tell you this, maybe bec it's new,but I am totally aware of it being on there. (bugs me actually- but it's impt!) Any veterans?? Secondly, how long do most of you wait to " become active " again afte surg? The gyn had no real suggestions, just when you feel up to it and the OS says it's ok to do normal activities... Comments? Guest guest
I was taking the pill when I had my surgery (still am taking it, but that doesn't really matter in this circumstance, now does it?). I took mine every day by crushing it and putting it in juice, etc. I figured that was the best option for me because I hate switching BC methods with all the wackiness it can cause with my hormones. If I didn't get every last particle of the crushed pill, I didn't really worry about it. I was a good six weeks post-op before my then fiance (now husband) and I resumed our regular activities, and I was taking the regular solid pill by the time I was one week post- op. I was splinted and banded tightly for the first week, but the surgeon swapped out those original bands for four looser ones that allowed me to take all my regular solid pills. The main reason it was six or eight weeks (can't remember for sure) after surgery before we were intimate again was that I felt very protective of my jaw. I didn't want it to get accidentally bumped or anything. Even so, I was still a little concerned the first time post-op. It's hard to go through such an intense surgery and not be protective of the area. So, since the pill was only compromised for about a week, and I had five weeks after that of taking it regularly before resuming activity, everything worked fine. Had I not gone through one entire cycle prior to resuming activity, we would have used a condom because regardless of whether or not you can take every grain of a crushed pill, the antibiotics they give you to prevent infections can decrease the effectiveness of the pill. And that goes for any antibiotics, whether related to jaw surgery or the common cold. Hope that helps. > Hi ladies... > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so here > goes! > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > patch? > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
I was on the pill for one year, and then decided to switch to the patch. It is so nice and convienient...I would never go back! And it actually helps with surgery. My family doctor said that wearing it during and after surgery can actually help prevent blood clotting...so that's a bonus. And as for the time you have to " wait " to become active again, my OS said no " contact sports " for 6 weeks, but anything else I would just need to deal with as it came my way. See how you feel and listen to your body. YOu can never go wrong
Guest guest
Neat! Didn't know I was doing soething helpful -re: clotting--that's cool. I am not someone who takes switching lightly, but this one seemed SO much better than risking taking only part of my pills for 6 wks (prob going to not be able to open at all)-again, I thought of the stress involved and the missing pieces-who needs to add to the reality of wires! And I was told that this is VERY close to what I was just taking, so smooth sailing is expected. So here's the big Q, where do/did you where it? I am tiny...and it's summer so my options at present are somewhat limited... I, as a first timer am on the lower-lower back (yeah ok, my kinda my tush) and it's ok, but I keep feeling my clothes getting snagged on it-and last nt, well when I fell asleep on that side...I woke up glued to my clothes...good thing I never needed help quitiing smoking! I seem a little patch challenged I guess. Oh and my NP at the gyn told me, that when she wore it close to her breasts it made them more tender. That is not something I want to do. So what's your take? Wait, I have a few more Q's after all -ever get a rash from it? -swimming pools Ok? -ever loose one (fall off?) THANKS!!! > I was on the pill for one year, and then decided to switch to the patch. It is > so nice and convienient...I would never go back! And it actually helps with > surgery. Guest guest
I have an IUD, never used the patch. We resumed intimacy about 3 weeks post op, no problems. > Hi ladies... > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so here > goes! > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > patch? > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
I had the same questions before my surgery. I was on the pill and switched to the patch a month or so before surgery. I decided on the patch because I wouldn't have to worry about getting it all in there, and because I could wear it for a few months straight without menstruating. (With permission from my OB/GYN, of course!) I didn't want to deal with having my period post-op! At my pre-op appt. two weeks before surgery, the anesthesiologist suggested that I not be on the pill or patch because it can increase your chance of blood clots and can both be ineffective when taken with antiobiotics. I'm six weeks post-op and haven't started back on them yet. Hope this helps! > > Hi ladies... > > > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so > here > > goes! > > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > > patch? > > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
That's interesting, bec another lady, I think laura maybe...noted that her doc said that these can help to PREVENT blood clots not cause them. Hmmmmmmmm....... Time to call the gyn and ask a Q. In thinking about it, I had surg in Feb-and while out patient, I was " under fully " and they had no concerns about me taking the pill and we talked about any drugs taken with in a year...hmmm, wonder why we all get such different advice from health care professionals??? you would think they were all learning the same stuff?! I will update when I talk with them again, THANKS!! > > > Hi ladies... > > > > > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so > > here > > > goes! > > > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > > > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > > > patch? > > > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
I've been on the patch since last November, and I also don't know what I ever did without it. Some things I've noticed with it though: Be careful where you put it -- don't put it where your clothes can rub it off like too high on your butt or stomach where the top of your pants rub. It will wrinkle and fall right off before the week is up. Always put it in a different place from week to week. When you take them off they leave behind little red squares that sometimes last over a week. Don't place a new patch where any of these (or any other kind of irritation) are left behind. It will itch like crazy all week! I've noticed that if I put it someplace muscular, like the top of my arm or shoulder, I will feel nauseous the first day after a week off. If I put it someplace with a little padding, like my belly or butt I feel fine. Placing the patches at night right before bedtime helps with this sometimes. I've never had a patch fall off that wasn't because of clothes rubbing against it. It stays right where it belongs in water, even hot water, during exercise, etc. Hope this helps! ~Jen > Hi ladies... > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so here > goes! > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > patch? > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
I was on the patch and i hated it. It always left a red square on my body after i removed it. It kept getting stuck to everything so i gave up and switched to the NuvaRing. I dont know what i would do without it but everyone has a different preference. As for intimacy i was feeling great at two and half weeks but i was very very careful about my face. > Hi ladies... > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so here > goes! > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > patch? > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
Jen--YOU ROCK! Thanks...I need this kind of scoop from those who know! I am only a few days in and I can see about the wrinkles...it's tricky since I am tiny and with pants being so low cut--I mean mind you I'm not a little 2inch zipper jeans-woman, but even the normal jeans don't offer a lot of space I went with the night thing, and will def keep in mind about the muscular thing...I was thinking for the first week of surg to go higher on me since I will be lying down or sitting but maybe not...nausea is NOT what I want post-op! Q--do you use any cordisone or anti itch stuff when it's off that area and the new one goes onto another spot? I mean for the red square? (honestly I am happy so far not to totally itch, I'm kinda senstitve) Q--are you pre or post op? I gave myself 3 wks to get used to this before...and then--I'm skipping and going onto another patch! ahahahahaha--that's sweet!! thanks Jen, jo > > Hi ladies... > > > > Ok...no one talks about this stuff, but it's a part of life-so > here > > goes! > > I wonder was anyone out there taking " the pill " ? and if so, has > > anyone out there who was on a birth control pill switched to the > > patch? > > They say it's the way to go. Guest guest
You're welcome! I use baby oil on the spot after I remove it (and come to think of it, baby oil is the BEST way to get rid of the leftover glue/sticky stuff that gets left behind), and once it's gone it stops itching from there so I've never had to use hydrocortisone or anything like that. The redness sticks around for a while, but it doesn't bother me at all. I am pre-op still. My surgery date isn't until August 24th. I'm getting excited. ~Jen > > > Hi ladies...
