Guest guest
hi. wednesday i will make 10 weeks after my upper and lower jaw surgery. i'm worried because i fill my upper jaw very numb and i can only opem my mouth about 22 mm. my upper jaw surgery was made by cutting the jaw in three pieces, and my centre piece is the one that feels a lot numb. the lower jaw recovery was very fast and now i almost fill everything, at this jaw. my mouth is getting open very slowly and it's hard to force then to open a little bit more every day, cause it makes me a sensation of discomfort when i do that, at my lower muscles. anybody can help me to understand this or has the same problem? thanks paul
Guest guest
Im about 10 weeks too. And I can only open about 22mm--maybe a tad more. I only had upper surgery and I still have numbness on top. I went to the surgeon and the ortho last week and neither one was concered enough to measure. It wasnt ever mentioned. Oh, the ortho DID say, " Is that ALL you can open? " But thats a complaint Ive heard from dentists for years and years, since shortly after I got braces on many years ago as a teenager. I also wonder about people on this board saying they open 35-40 mm. Its true before surgery I could open my mouth wider than currently, but I dont think I could ever open my mouth 35-40mm. Not ever. If you had to estimate, what would you say was normal for you previously? I dont actually feel discomfort. I dont really have a word for it. If I try to gently 'force' myself to open wider I feel a pulling in the behind my back teeth and at the top of my mouth where there used to be swelling. I was not given exercises or anything so Im just making stuff up as I go along. I try to move my face and jaw and tongue around a bit every so often. (It was only a week or two ago that I was able to eat an ice cream cone. P.S.-it was WONDERFUL!) And right now Im working on chewing more challenging thigns, particularly with my back teeth. That seems to loosen things up a bit. But there has not been much noticeable change from day to day. > hi. > > wednesday i will make 10 weeks after my upper and lower jaw surgery. > i'm worried because i fill my upper jaw very numb and i can only > opem my mouth about 22 mm. > my upper jaw surgery was made by cutting the jaw in three pieces, > and my centre piece is the one that feels a lot numb. > the lower jaw recovery was very fast and now i almost fill > everything, at this jaw. > my mouth is getting open very slowly and it's hard to force then to > open a little bit more every day, cause it makes me a sensation of > discomfort when i do that, at my lower muscles. > > anybody can help me to understand this or has the same problem? > > thanks > paul
Guest guest
well anae3333, i fill a little bit less worried after i read your message, so i know now that i'm not the only person with this problems i told you. i think my mouth will open slowly, but it's hard when we try to eat something in this situation. my ortho has told me to eat some real meat, and soft solids to make my muscles work, and then my mouth will open. now i eat almost everything i eat before surgery, unless realy hard solids, but my mouth still open only the measure i told you. > > hi. > > > > wednesday i will make 10 weeks after my upper and lower jaw surgery. > > i'm worried because i fill my upper jaw very numb and i can only > > opem my mouth about 22 mm. > > my upper jaw surgery was made by cutting the jaw in three pieces, > > and my centre piece is the one that feels a lot numb. > > the lower jaw recovery was very fast and now i almost fill > > everything, at this jaw. > > my mouth is getting open very slowly and it's hard to force then to > > open a little bit more every day, cause it makes me a sensation of > > discomfort when i do that, at my lower muscles. > > > > anybody can help me to understand this or has the same problem? > > > > thanks > > paul
Guest guest
Hi I am 13 weeks post surgery (upper/lower/palatal split) My opening is about the same as you and I feel pretty depressed about it as, although it does not stop me eating, unless the forkful of food is small, it is quite painful to stretch just those few extra millimetres to accommodate it. I have tongue depressor exercises to do which have helped but I do find them very painful on my teeth which then sets up pain in my jaw and temple, and also the roof of my mouth where I had the palatal split. There has been a little improvement and the surgeon and ortho do not seem worried. I see the surgeon again tomorrow so I will bring it up with him. My chin and lower lip still have altered sensation - not totally numb but very prickly to touch and feeling stiff. I sincerely hope I get normal feeling back. Ihad my braces removed a few days ago so have been a bit worried about the tongue depressor exercises on my newly released teeth but so far they don't seem to have come to any harm. I get my retainer fitted in two days. Best wishes Sue (UK)
