MY HUSBAND WAS DIAGNOSED BY MAYO CLINAC AS HAVING SHY-DRAGER. HIS

SYMPTOMS ARE " TEXT BOOK " .

DURING A RECENT HOSPITALIZATION FOR CARDIAC RELATED PROBLEMS OUR

PRIMARY PHYSICIAN BERATED ME FOR MENTIONING SHY-DRAGER TO THE ER

ATTENDING DR. OUR PRIMARY STATES, " UNLESS YOUR HUSBAND HAS SEVERE

DEMENTIA HE CANNOT HAVE MSA. THE MAYO CLINIC DIAGNOSIS IS WRONG. "

AM I MISSING SOMETHING OR IS HE CORRECT? WE WILL BE RETURNING TO MAYO

CLINIC NEXT MONTH FOR FURTHER EVALUATION AND TREATMENT...BUT Y'ALL

SEEM SO KNOWLEDGEABLE I THOUGHT I WOULD ASK FOR YOUR EXPERIENCE.

MY HUSBAND DOES HAVE SOME MEMORY DEFICIT AND CANNOT CONCENTRATE BUT

DEMETIA, EVEN MILD DEMENTIA, IS NOT EVIDENT.

THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS.

Hi Lori,

Dementia is not a common symptom in MSA. I've never heard of a doctor

saying you don't have MSA because you don't have dementia nor have I ever

read such a thing in any of the medical literature describing MSA. Have

your primary physician read this article.

Lori,

Your physician is wrong. Dementia is NOT usually part of MSA, although some

cognitive impairment may occur. I would suggest having the doctors from

Mayo communicate with his primary care physician as to what MSA is and how

it should be treated. If he is that insistent about the dementia issue he

may not be treating other problems appropriately.

Your doctor is just plain wrong. if he is " berating " you about this or

anything else it is time to look for another doctor and perhaps report his

behavior. it is inappropriate.
