Guest guest
Hi all-- Well, I was on here a few weeks ago posting about how concerned I was regarding the decisions my doctor is having me make regarding surgery. I am to have wisdom teeth removed, my upper jaw moved back and upward, and lower jaw moved forward to correct an overbite and I've come to the conclusions that basically I should go along with the surgeon's recommendations. He suggests that I get the old school " wired shut " jaws for at least 4 weeks, only to avoid any chance of relapse. I now go in on Wednesday July 28th to Washington Hospital Center for the surgery (I donated blood on Friday, had a complete physical, and now have one more appt. with the surgeon tomorrow). Here's the issue-- how laid up are you beyond the first 3-4 days?? I would like to go to a concert in Virginia on Aug. 3rd (6 days after surgery) and I wonder if I'll feel up to going?? I really don't mind the aesthetic part, but I just hope to not feel miserable at the show. If I had some energy drinks like Boost or even a Red Bull I wonder if it would improve my chances of feeling good? I'm a very active person to begin with so I think the staying in bed thing would really prolong recovery rather than help it. I will definitely get online after my surgery to let you know how it all went, hopefully with some good news for all of the August people! Another question (now if you hadn't thought so before, you all are going to think I'm crazy!)-- does anyone know how long before one can scuba dive after surgery?? I assume it's got to be a while because of the pressure beyond normal pool depths but I just wonder if it would be okay once the jaw heals in the 6 weeks or so. W. Guest guest
If I'd gone to a concert six days out, I think I'd have slept through it... Dunno anything about scuba diving, but I'll bet someone else does. Guest guest
Really, so if I sleep straight from Wed. through the Tuesday will I still be pretty bad off? I guess the sleep thing is important for recovery but I guess I didn't think I'd need more than a couple days worth (I've never been through any major surgery before!) Were you able to stay awake for more than a couple of hours at a time?? Doesn't the sleeping get boring...lol?? What was a typical day like after day 3?? Thanks for the insight!! > If I'd gone to a concert six days out, I think I'd have slept through > it... > > Dunno anything about scuba diving, but I'll bet someone else does. > > Cammie
Guest guest
It's just that surgery and healing are so draining on the body's energies. Or at least they were for me. (I was, however, 56 when I had surgery, which may have made a difference.) Nope. Sleeping didn't get boring at all. I'd be watching tv on the couch, and just drift off. Usually, best I can remember, I'd get up in the morning, do whatever, then settle down to watch tv in the afternoon and zzzzz! I wouldn't say it's bad off, and I had a really easy ride of the recovery, in addition to which I was neither wired nor tightly banded. But the one thing I did have, persistently, was weariness and a need for a lot of sleep. You may be different, but that was it for me. Guest guest
I slept off and on for the first 4 days. As soon as I stopped taking the pain meds I stopped sleepin so much. I might have been able to go to a concert on day 6 but I'm not sure how much I would have enjoyed. What kind of a concert is it? Is there any danger of rowdiness? You don't want to be bumped accidentally in your new jaw. How long is the concert? Can you bing your own food in case you need a snack? Some venues will not allow food from the outside brought in. On day 6 I was eating small meals every 2-3 hours so I wasn't going far from home. I think the question to ask is is this concerrt important enough to you to take the risks involved in being in a large public venue filled with people where anything could happen. Sorry to rain on your parade. But I can't think of any concert that would be important enough to me to do this. Guest guest
My daugher is not allowed in crowds for 2 weeks (had her surgery on 7/14), dont know what happens after that, we find out weekly at her check ups. Everyone heals differently, but I cant imagine having enough energy to travel to and sit at a concert after 1 week. Good Luck Re: Surgery July 28th!! Guest guest
I only had lower, but my final surgery was on June 29th. On the Fourth of July I went to a fireworks show that our city puts on at a huge park. There were a ton of kids around, rolling in the grass. Crowds were all around. My wife was a nervous wreck the entire time worrying about me getting hit, and it transferred to me eventually. I enjoyed the fireworks, even with a mile walk into and out of the park. But, I was extremely nervous on the walk, and the way out with all the crowds around me. Guest guest
Yes, my husband keeps informing me that I'll be sleeping for that next week but I guess I will only understand after next Wednesday :- ). At this point I'm just thinking how to make a nicer use of the vacation time- maybe if I can go to the beach and lay there instead of at home?? It feels so unproductive to use 2 weeks of vacation time from work to lay home in bed and I guess it's hard for me to imagine how much the surgery will take out of me at this point. I guess it won't be too long until I find out, but I'm hoping for the best! > > > If I'd gone to a concert six days out, I think I'd have slept > > through > > > it... > > > > > > Dunno anything about scuba diving, but I'll bet someone else does. > > > > > > Cammie
Guest guest
Hi & Cammie, I could understand your doctor's order maybe if it was perhaps a Green Day concert or other group whose concerts are by nature very rowdy (mosh pits are standard occurrences), but at a concert where most people will just be sitting or standing, not doing anything crazy, I think it would do anyone in this situation good. My surgeon actually instructed me to go to the concert so I guess I'll just have to follow his orders now :-) He said that the best way to heal is to try to get as back to normal as possible, get out of bed and outside, take walks, and get the blood flowing. Hopefully his instruction works (AND I'll be able to follow them)! Cammie, I'll probably be right along with you come next week though. I'll be Rip Van Winkle sleeping and not know where the last 2 weeks went! LOL, I AM going to at least try to stay awake and get out of the house AND to this concert even if it ends up just being an effort and no success ;-) > > Hi all-- > > > > Well, I was on here a few weeks ago posting about how concerned I > > was regarding the decisions my doctor is having me make regarding > > surgery. Guest guest
Hi Marsha-- It's a Rush concert, and generally the crowd is pretty tame (I've been to one before) and we do have seats, so it should work out even though I probably won't be feeling too spectacular. I think it'll be ok, and being a tall person should also help. My surgeon actually instructed me to go to the concert at my appt. today, so now I feel a little more comfortable . He said getting out of the house and doing normal activities as soon as possible is key to fast recovery. I just need to be careful! I'll have to buy some Mcs milkshakes on the way there. Oh yeah, and I expected to be sleeping the first 3-4 days, and I'm not sure what kind of pain meds I'll be on so I guess that will be a factor in it as well. > > > If I'd gone to a concert six days out, I think I'd have slept > > through > > > it... > > > > > > Dunno anything about scuba diving, but I'll bet someone else does. > > > > > > Cammie
