Guest guest
hi! i'm sorry you're feeling so bad! if you're on day four, however, i'm not surprised. days 4 & 5 were probably the worst for me. where is the pain? is it in your head or your jaws? my OS told me that this was muscle pain. if you have prescription pain meds, take them as often as you are allowed. also, try applying heat to the area where you are hurting. this helped me out a lot! this won't last forever! hope you feel better! heather > hey everyone- > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who had it > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper jaw, > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am sooo > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of the > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
Hi Vikki - The good news is, this is the worst of it, you should be feeling better soon. Is your pain in the hip or in the jaws? Try to describe it. Is the pain in the joints, on one side only? Is it just a really bad headache? It might be a good idea to call your doctor's office and get their opinion, but I can tell you what I would do: I'm assuming the Lortab is one dosage every 4-6 hours. I would take one dosage, and a second dosage two hours later. Wait the 4 hours before taking the third dosage. Then keep taking the pain meds every 4-6 hours. Don't wait until the pain comes back. Guest guest
Hey Jay! Thanks for getting back to me. The pain is in why whole face from the surgury. i am so swollen (my whole botton face is literally HUGE) and it hurts to try and open my lips to take the meds. its on both sides, and my whole face is numb from my cheeks down so i also feel like i have to itch my face but im not sure. right now i have this big retainer thing in my mouth (im supposed to have it in there for 10 days or so) so my whole mouth cavity is smaller which feels very odd and makes it difficlt to swallow. i cannot open my mouth at all, and i breath completely out of my nose. I still have some tape on my face from the surgury that is suppossed to be off i think Friday at my appointment. My hip hurts from the bone graph because they needed extra bone to add to my face from the surgury. The pain meds are every 3 hours, but im just worried that i am gettting 'immune to them' from taking them exactly every 3 hours. what did you do to entertain yourself during this hard time? i try and watch TV, or go online, but i find that even hard cause i amalways thinking about the pain in my face. everyone says the first week is the worst, then it really does get better. is this really true? also if icall my dr (or, you know have someone else call, i cant talk right now either) do you think they will give me a stronger pain med? thanks again Vikki > > hey everyone- > > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who had > it > > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper > jaw, > > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am > sooo > > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of > the > > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
You should start to get some relief from the swelling by day 5 or 6, as for the pain, I never really had that much so I do not know. I actually stopped my pain meds by day 4 because they made me so drowsy all day. Have you asked you doctor for something stronger, what about ice? Sorry you're having such a rough time. Guest guest
i didn't feel like my pain meds were working either and my OS prescribed something different which worked MUCH better. its worth a shot. they are there to help you. i called my doctor's office several times in the first week and they were very patient and helpful. > > > hey everyone- > > > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > > > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who > had > > it > > > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper > > jaw, > > > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am > > sooo > > > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of > > the > > > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
Thank you everyone for making me feel better, you guys are all great I just got back from the doctors and he prescribed me some muscle relaxers becuase he says i was probably restricting my muscles in my sleep and that is why it hurts so bad in the morning.i am drinking tons of fluids, and using warm cloths on my face so i was told the morning will probably be the hardest so i should take these pills crushed up with water, and the worst will be over within 3 days. so im just gonna stick it out these next few days... Thanks again everyone-if anyone is getting the surgury soon and wants to talk, or has questions or support, feel free to IM or email me yahoo ID - vixx217 vixx217@... vikki > > hey everyone- > > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who had > it > > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper > jaw, > > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am sooo > > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of the > > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
Have you let your surgeon know? If not, do so, right away. It's unusual to have so much pain. He or she may say not to worry, but be sure his office advises you on it. Guest guest
Sounds like, to me, a lot of what's bothering you is the post-op miseries -- swelling, congestion, frustration, etc. I do think the hip graft sites have a rep for being painful, though, and I still think I'd get someone to call the surgeon's office. The itch that can't be scratched is infamous. It has to do with damaged nerves that are trying to heal. It almost always goes away, but it may take some time. Congestion: are you using a vaporizer? dry lips: Aquaphor, or vitamin E oil. It is tough, I know, and frustrating. But it really will get better. Hang on and hang in there. Guest guest
Vikki, hang in there. First thought, be sure to take the pain meds, and if you can-take them as you feel pain starting, no holding out for BIG pain, as that can be counter productive on helping your pain pills deminish the pain. Second... easy to say, not easy to do...try to keep calm. Relax. I had a loved one, go through something very painful last year and like this is...it was also very mentally overwhelming at the same time. We came up with something that helped a little...and here goes. read this slowly, bec it's nothing more than what it is... remember when things are really tough... no worries about tomorrow or 10 minutes from now... all you really have to do is get through " NOW " . by the time you read these words, that moment has passed and you did it...you got through it and all you have to do is get through NOW. really it's just trying to not get ahead of yourself. we all put expectations and pressure on oursleves to deal with the pain better or go back to work sooner or feel better asap-think about it... " get well soon " ...Heck! get well when YOU can...a little at a time and just try and get thrugh the moment. Then you can look back in an hour and think...you go! you got through lots of now and lots of moments...YOU CAN DO THIS. it will pass. god speed...you'll be in my thoguhts tonight.jo > hey everyone- > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who had it > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper jaw, > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am sooo > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of the > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
Vikki - I doubt that you are becoming immune to the pain meds. They might not be working for you. If you have been taking them regularly and you still have pain, you definitely need to ask your doctor for something different or stronger. There's no guarantee they'll give you something stronger but hopefully they will. Take care and keep us posted, Jay > > > hey everyone- > > > i just had jaw surgury on saturday morning, and i am in the most > > > pain ive ever been. how long did it take for those of you who > had > > it > > > done to feel a little bit better? for me, they broke the upper > > jaw, > > > expanded it, then broke the lower jaw and pushed it back. i am > > sooo > > > swollen its discusting and i can hardly move around becuasae of > > the > > > bone graph on my hip. any suggesstions to help the pain? Guest guest
Vikki - Entertainment/passing the time: for the first few days I had ice packs on my face constantly and I was hitting the pain meds pretty hard, so I watched TV and snoozed. After day 3 I cut back on the pain meds and played the X-box, went online, watched some tv, etc. Also the Lakers were in the NBA finals at the time Thanks to the sleeplessness, I got to watch all the TV programs that are normally past my bedtime, like Conan O', and even some programs I wished I never saw, like Carson Daly. Plus you stay busy just eating - it seems like I was eating (drinking Ensure) constantly, or juice, or soup, meds, or something. It's almost a full-time job just taking care of yourself. Then you take a nap. Anyway, you just take it a day at a time and the next thing you know, two weeks has passed. Guest guest
Hey- So now it is day 5 and i have to say that the morning is definitly the worst! I went to the doctor yesterday morning after posing here, and i got some muscle relaxers because my doctor says my musces are probably contracting during my sleep, and did those make me sleep all day/night yesterday. I am able to move my jaw now, i am just so miserable because i am so weak, tired, and hate this numbing feeling all over my face. I am trying to not think about it, but if i move around too much, it hurts, and its hard to watch TV because my vision is all blurry. But I am just trying to take it one say at a time like you said, and I will see my doctor again on Friday for another check up. One more question, did you have any problems sleeping? i have to sleep on my back with my head at an angle, and i find if i sleep too much, i get a pain in my lower back and its hard to sleep again. ANyways, thanks for all your help! Now i know many people go through this and i just have to suck it up and wait and just get through it like everyone else.
