Guest guest
Hi all: I know this has been discussed in the past, but my question is: did dbs ever help anyone with MSA or only people with PD? Thanks in advance for your answers. Regards, jerrie
Guest guest
Jerrie, To my knowledge, it has never helped a MSA patient. It helps many PD patients, especially with tremor. With PD they know the spot which causes the tremor and can place eletrodes there to counter the tremor. With MSA, several areas of the brain are problem areas and they do not know how to help MSA symptoms. This MAY change in the future, but I have not seen real doctors hopeful that it will help MSA. Guest guest
Just as a bit of encouragement. I have a friend who has young onset Parkinson's who was a plumbing contractor but had to stop working. He has Fetal tissue transplant several years ago when it was still available here in Los Angeles, and he is just now beginning to see major improvements. He can now perform some of the tests that even a year ago he could not do. He still takes a lot of Sinemet and had disconaesia(sp?), but he no longer freezes and is able to do some plumbing work. It will be very interesting to see how he does in the future. Barbara
Guest guest
Jerrie, They have in fact tried it for MSA but it didnt work.. It is only good for People who actually have confirmed Parkinson's. Guest guest
Question - when dbs is successful in pd, does it really resolve any of the symptoms/effects of the pd beyond helping to lessen the dopamine related symptoms that we all associate with classic pd? In other words, its not as if the other issues of pd that are sometimes also prevalent in msa are alleviated or lessened, is it? Guest guest
Jerry, DBS only takes care of the tremor, nothing else.. and it is not a cure, it is kinda like a band aid.. while your waiting for the cure. How ever, their is a time limit on it.. as they adjust the frequency to benifit the tremor, it can only go so high and than your back to square one, But, the releif is so wonderful, I have a friend here in Charlotte who had it done on both sides back in Feb, you should see him , you would never know he even had PD.. , " tenacity's man " > >Reply-To: shydrager >To: shydrager > >Subject: RE: MSA-deep brain stimulation >Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 09:53:39 -0500 > >Question - when dbs is successful in pd, does it really resolve any of >the >symptoms/effects of the pd beyond helping to lessen the dopamine related >symptoms that we all associate with classic pd? Guest guest
http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/deepbrain2/patientworksheethome.htm Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy Patient Worksheet The following worksheet consists of a number of questions to help the physician or health care professional determine whether a particular patient may be a good candidate for surgery for Parkinson's disease. If you have any doubt whether the patient may be a good candidate or not, you might want to consider referral to a center experienced in the surgical management of patients with Parkinson's disease. Guest guest
Jerrey, one other VERY IMPORTANT THING, before one actually has the DBS, he or she should make ABSOLUTLY SURE they have PD. They should insist on haveing an F-Dopa PET Scan. Than hopefully, there want be any other mistakes made. At LONG ISLAND MEDICAL CENTER, they want concider a DBS with out it.. Make since doesnt it????? Guest guest
Barb, That is intersting as the Chinese studies showed slow improvment over years also way back in the 1980's. But they stopped following after two years as far as I know. What do his doctors say? I note that California has passed a law allowing stem cell research. Wonder what that will do to the Federal ban on it. Will Ashcroft send his womb police into California (like his Oregon assisted death police) ;-) Note to all, I am NOT for assisted suicide myself, but recognize the rights of those who want it - I would have understood if Charlotte had wanted it - she did not. Hope the guy continues to improve. Hope his doctors write it up. Take care, Bill Werre ========================== kmcrae@... wrote: >Just as a bit of encouragement. Guest guest
Bill: i only know this one person who had the transplant when they were available in Los Angeles (no, actually, I knew another but he died two years later of a stroke). However, there are quite a few in our area who have had the surgery since it was available here for a number if years. the team who did it is gone, but I am sure someone will follow up and report since there are so many of them and they do meet together once in a while. Love, Barbara
Guest guest
Deep brain stimulation can help the symptom of tremor in SOME patients with Parkinson disease. It is NOT currently recommended for MSA. With MSA there are MULTIPLE areas of the brain affected so there is not one specific target that DBS can help. These sites can help explain what DBS is, what it does and how to determine if you are a candidate for the surgery. 1.
