Guest guest
HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days ago and i've been reading all your messages and found them very helpful. I have been in braces for a year now and scheduled for upper & lower jaw surgery on 8/12 - I have been struggling with ear pain, loud ringing and headaches (especially after a meal)- went through a bit of depression - glad to say i have this pretty much under control - I am afraid of it coming back after the surgery, i'm having anxiety as the day draws closer. I have to admit reading your messages have opened my eyes alot to what is involved with this surgery and has helped me prepare for it better. The one thing I am concerned with is that I have to young children and i'm a little concerned of how they may react to my apperence when I get home - my husband tells me not to worry but of course i do- anyone have kids? I will have my husband help for the 1st week - then he goes back to work - will i be able to handle two kids my second week post op?? I'm so not looking forward to this but it has to be done - my OS says all the pain will be realeaved after this - lets hope he's right! Anyway thanks for letting me vent - good luck to every one! Guest guest
Hi Rami, I was wired years ago, for a diff reason...and have to say that the reaction to my " look " at that time was mixed for those who didn't know me or what was going on, some thought I was in a car accident, or losing weight (ha-I actually gained during my 7wks), but others looked at my fiance and though, HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO HER? Mind you that was the furthest from the truth. I had fallen all alone...heck if someone WAS there, maybe I would have been caught! Anyway, not sure how old your kids are, but you're mom and mom is #1 ...and they love you regardless...but just may need some understanding to why you're puffy or not opening up your mouth. I would say to sit with them and explain on whatever level they will be able to understand that mommy is going to look a little differnet, but that you're OK and there's nothing to worry about. If they are old enough you can tell them more, like you may move a littls slower or talk softly...but they'll be ok and so will you. Remember, we're all a little freaked out sometimes. but you're really NOT alone...we're all taking this on...and you will get through this ok. we all will. some moments are just harder than others (I gave blood last nt and fell apart afterwards and today feel like poop, but under this pale shakey skin, I know I will be ok and this will pass. And when I got to work, shared this w/co-workers sot hey weren't concerned about my apparance...always good to share at times like this...when anyone is left to make their own conclusions, it usually is worse than reality! hang in there and congrats on your plans...I'm 8/9 ps! jo ..com, " rpritchett28 " wrote: > HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days ago > and i've been reading all your messages and found them very helpful. > I have been in braces for a year now and scheduled for upper & lower > jaw surgery on 8/12 - I have been struggling with ear pain, loud > ringing and headaches (especially after a meal)- went through a bit > of depression - glad to say i have this pretty much under control - I > am afraid of it coming back after the surgery, i'm having anxiety as > the day draws closer. Guest guest
--- Hi Rami, Good Luck with your upcoming surgery!!! Its completely normal to feel anxious. I have 3 children (ages 5,3,2). I was told no lifting for 5 weeks, no ifs ands or buts. My parents are here for 5 weeks to help with the care. They have been a Godsend. My husband helps alittle but I knew I needed more help (he's very lazy). I had upper and lower surgery with genio, septoplasty, turbs reduced on july 6th. I am doing well except for being tired and being sick of liquids. The first week is the worst then it gets better. I talk with your OS about care of your kids. I didn't want to go through a second surgery in a million years so I have followed instructions to a tee, including being off work for 4 weeks. Any help you can get take it!!!! Hopefully your kids are older and more self- sufficient. My kids have adjusted well. We keep a calendar and mark off the days until mommy is all better. The first week they were scared because of the bruising and swelling. We tried in advance to prepare them. It was still a big shock. But they now accept mommy was sick and is getting better each day (its helps that the bruising and most of swelling went away after the first week!!). So again Good Luck!! You'll do well and be happy that you did the surgery!! I'm happy with the results so far. Guest guest
Thanks for the info - my kids are 5 & 3 - not so easy to manage, they constantly fight with each other (as brother & sisters do) They don't listen to me as well as their father - I usually have to sream at the top of my lungs to get them to stop. Its very frustrating because when my husband is there - he can just walk in the room without saying anything and they immediatly stop. I guess I,m gonna have to come up with some sort of plan. I know I'll get through it, just like everyone else. I am happy to here you are happy with your results - that gives me hope that all this pain will soon be gone. Have a great weekend! Guest guest
Thanks for your input It is so nice sharing this with people that are going through this - its just not the same talking to my family and friends about this because all they can really say is " that sucks " ! Anyways i'm sorry to hear you aren't doing so well - giving blood is no fun and to have to go through that afterwards is awful. I just gave my 1st unit last week - it went ok - got a little light headed so I layed there for about 20 minutes and drank a soda and felt better - I also made sure I ate a big meal before because i am anemic and when my iron is low I get very dizzy, hot and everthing gets dark and most of the time faint and worst of all after that i usually get sick. Not fun!! Good luck with everything! Guest guest
i've read a lot of posts where people talk about giving blood before their surgery. in fact...it's seems like most people have to give blood before their surgery. so it makes me wonder what determines whether you give blood or not. is it determined by how major the surgery is? i mean i'm getting upper, lower, genio, and nasal/sinus turbinetrics and donating blood was never mentioned. they also said that i don't need a physical before my surgery...which i also thought was surprising... Guest guest
THANK YOU RAMI for making me feel better too. It was not fun, but I am so glad to see it was #2 last nt not #1. I wrote the whole deal earlier " not feeling so well today " I am with you about being alone out here...and " that sucks " . At work, they're nice-for men ;)seems I am the only woman here...odd but true. and they get it, but sometimes I wonder...I told them originally out week one, prob 2...and will try if I can to work from home...there's no one here to really do my job when I'm gone...and they were ok, but I don't think they " get " any of it. Today our partner co's Pres was the only one to look at me and say, how are you feeling...and I told him...crappy! the others just said, oh. (?!) might as well said, that sucks dude! gee, thanks. I found this site a few wks ago and couldn't be more happy....it's offered me lots of good info, support and people who REALLY " get it " . I'm here until late afternoon...only at work pc for now...jo > > > HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days > ago > > > and i've been reading all your messages and found them very > > helpful. > > > I have been in braces for a year now and scheduled for upper & > > lower > > > jaw surgery on 8/12 - I have been struggling with ear pain, loud > > > ringing and headaches (especially after a meal)- went through a > bit > > > of depression - glad to say i have this pretty much under > control - > > I > > > am afraid of it coming back after the surgery, i'm having anxiety > > as > > > the day draws closer. Guest guest
I think that a lot of it depends on your doctor, although it does seem more common the more you are having done. I am only having lower so I was told I will not need to donate blood as there is less bleeding with lower. Some doctors prefer for you not to donate blood, they prefer it left inside you. I don't think very many people end up needing it (I know there have been a few that I've read, but not many). I also don't need a physical before my surgery. I think my surgeon was basing that mainly on my age (I'm only 27), but it could also be based on the hospital policy. Guest guest
tom - my OS requested that i give 2 units of blood, however when i called to make the appointment the nurse said that it is optional to give blood and mentioned to me that out of the 20 years the OS has been doing this type of surgery he hasn't had to use the blood. So i just decided to give only 1 unit (i quess to have peace of mind). i they will run a bunch of tests when you go for your pre-addmission testing. Hope this helps. rami > > > > HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days > > ago > > > > and i've been reading all your messages and found them very > > > helpful. > > > > I have been in braces for a year now and scheduled for upper & > > > lower > > > > jaw surgery on 8/12 - I have been struggling with ear pain, > loud > > > > ringing and headaches (especially after a meal)- went through a > > bit > > > > of depression - glad to say i have this pretty much under > > control - > > > I > > > > am afraid of it coming back after the surgery, i'm having > anxiety > > > as > > > > the day draws closer. Guest guest
JO- i know what you mean about work - i am an office manager for a small company and I work for two insurance agents - i haven't gotten the offical word on how long i would be out so I told them two weeks. Here's the thing I am the only one that works on Fridays and my surgery is on a Thurs - so I will be out for three fridays - I got one of the girls to cover the two of my fridays and was having trouble covering the 3rd fri. my boss said " well you'll be able to come back to work by then its not that big of a surgery " I thought I was going to punch him. They just don't get it!! > > > > HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days > > ago > > > > and i've been reading all your messages and found them very > > > helpful. Guest guest
YOu are so funny...I'm laughing aloud and hay! I'm at work... but I totally hear you. But for your sake, remember, no punching, bec you don't want them to punch back...maybe throw something from a distance so you can get a running start on them! jo - -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Rami " wrote: > JO- i know what you mean about work - i am an office manager for a > small company and I work for two insurance agents - i haven't gotten > the offical word on how long i would be out so I told them two weeks. > Here's the thing I am the only one that works on Fridays and my > surgery is on a Thurs - so I will be out for three fridays - I got > one of the girls to cover the two of my fridays and was having > trouble covering the 3rd fri. my boss said " well you'll be able to > come back to work by then its not that big of a surgery " I thought I > was going to punch him. Guest guest
---Tom, I just had upper, lower, genio, septo, turbs reduced July 6th. I was told to give blood but decided I trusted the blood bank was good enough. I figured giving blood so soon before surgery would lower my immune system and I be behind the " eight ball " before surgery. I ended up needing 3 units of blood after surgery. Also because of all the fluids they gave me they don't know if I truly needed 3 units or the fluids gave a false decrease in my hemoglobin. Its a very personal decision to make. I was told its major surgery thus I was required to get a physical plus preop bloodwork. It seems foolish not to have the physical and bloodwork, I reask your OS. Good luck, In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Tom " wrote: > i've read a lot of posts where people talk about giving blood before > their surgery. in fact...it's seems like most people have to give > blood before their surgery. so it makes me wonder what determines > whether you give blood or not. is it determined by how major the > surgery is? i mean i'm getting upper, lower, genio, and nasal/sinus > turbinetrics and donating blood was never mentioned. they also said > that i don't need a physical before my surgery...which i also thought > was surprising... > > Tom > > > > > > HI - New here - i was unaware of this site until a couple days > > ago > > > > and i've been reading all your messages and found them very > > > helpful. Guest guest
Suggestion: Since your boss gave you the opening, go to site 2, and either let him look at, or print out for him, a few of the immediately post-op pictures. I believe you could do this gently and pleasantly, and say you just wanted to clear up any " confusion " about the aftermath of these procedures...
