My ENT knows that my worst time with sore ears, etc. begins in the first hot humid weather in April here in New England. It goes into September possibly until the first frost. So I saw an allergist. When I said I thought there is a connection with polychondritis she didn't hesitate but said immediately, "Of course, it affects autoimmune Yes, Liz I do think allergies must be in this picture somewhere because too many are flaring at the same time. Guest guest
When I posted several months ago about a possible connection with allergies I heard from a few who have seasonal flareups. I see that Lu is wondering about this too. My ENT knows that my worst time with sore ears, etc. begins in the first hot humid weather in April here in New England. It goes into September possibly until the first frost. So I saw an allergist. When I said I thought there is a connection with polychondritis she didn't hesitate but said immediately, " Of course, it affects autoimmune diseases. " So then I did all the skin tests. To my surprise and hers absolutely nothing showed up while I was having severe symptoms [so much so that the nurse thought I might keel over -- I didn't]. The doctor said she had only one other patient like that and thinks the prednisone may have affected the results. So then I became more observant at home and found that I am allergic to several things inside as well as outside. My allergies are slight so I didn't think too much about it. First I realized that I was allergic to my pillow. No wonder I woke up every morning with painful ears. Then I found that I am allergic to the printers' ink on my morning newspaper. The allergist said that I get the sniffles in a store or anything else that has airconditioning where the air is recirculated and it's recirculating allergens. Also could apply to airplanes. I did pretty well at the beginning of the summer but a few weeks ago I had a big flareup [it's still here] after spending a long time reading the thick Sunday newspaper. I've tried antihistamines -- allegra and claritin are a disaster so I'm trying to find one that helps. Sometimes I get pain in the ears right after being near something I am allergic to....sometimes within a few minutes. So please, people, think about this. I was so much better at the beginning of the summer & and next March I should start medications to see if it will avert some of the problem. Sorry to take so long but this might apply to some of you!! G
