Guest guest
Hi, I'm and I'm new to this group. Here is my situation: I have a pretty heavy underbite and as a result, I have developed moderate TMJD which is bothering me a great deal. My orthodontist has discussed options such as jaw surgery, and my family and I have decided that I can do this. However, one thing that my orthodontist pointed out to me was that i should wait until my bones stop growing and my facial bone structure stable before i take further steps such as surgery to correct my problem. I currently have a splint i wear during the night and it seems to help a bit, but i want my problem to be corrected as soon as possible. ly, im only sixteen and according to my orthodontist, i should wait till im eighteen, but i really fear most for the deterioation of my TMJ which will cause further problems in the future. If there is anyone that has had this surgery around my age or has any input on my case please reply. I want to do it next year in the beginning of summer so i have a full 2 to 3 months to recover. Unlike most teenagers i actually have done extensive research on this but the my question about when i should have this procedure done hasn't been clearly addressed on the sites and articles i have read. Of course, like any teenager would be, i'm quite insecure about my protruding lower jaw, but my main concern is my TMJ. Also can anyone that has had this surgery done due to an underbite give personal instances about how TMJD has affected or been eliminated pre/post-operation, as i am very curious about the effect of this operation has on TMJD. Also is physical exercise permitted during recovery? After about 2 weeks of course, given that I can move around and have the energy to? Or is it detrimental to the recovery process? Guest guest
Hi, My name is and im 16. I just recently had the lower jaw surgery done along with upper jaw surgery a fix to my deviated septum and chin surgery. My advice to you is wait until you stop growing. I had mine done now because i had an xray done to see if i was done growing and it said i was. So if you want to have it done in the begining of next summer then I would say to go and get an xray to see if your done growing. I was also very self conscience about my prutruding lower jaw and having the surgery is a lot of pain for you and a lot of work for the people taking care of you. Im only 11 days post-op right now and Im wired shut. I cant open my mouth or move my jaws. For exercise i guess its all up to you. After a few days you will feel a lot better and be able to actaully get up and move around. I am able to get up move around and do what i want but i get tired easily. Hope this helped. If you get the surgery good luck. > Hi, I'm and I'm new to this group. Guest guest
I had my surgery at 15, but males develop later than females. You should trust the advice of your OS, if your bones continue to grow, the surgery could be in vain, but if you are still unsure, try getting a second opinion. > Hi, I'm and I'm new to this group. Guest guest
I am also 16, and I had corrective jaw surgery 25 days ago. I went through " the works " - upper jaw, lower jaw, genioplasty, and they fixed my deviated septum. If there is much of a problem with doing the surgery at an early age, I was never told about it. In fact. my surgeon told me that the earlier you do it, the better off you will be. (I hate to submit a contrasting opinion). I don't blame you for wanting to have this surgery done. My parents had a grande old time getting the insurance to pay, and I was very worried that it was never going to happen. Now that I have done it, I am happy with the result. (So far). My TMJD pain is virtually nonexistant now, and I haven't had a headache since the surgery. I wouldn't worry about missing too much tennis. Personally, I was back to swimming and hiking after 2 weeks, although I do seem to get tired sooner than I used to. My oral surgeon doesn't seem to have a problem with it, as long as I don't get hit in the jaw. Don't accept anything I say, or whatever anyone else here says, as fact. We are all just here to support each other and offer opinions. You should probably let your oral surgeon and orthodontist decide what's best. About the Taiwan thing, DON'T DO IT! I know my oral surgeon and orthodontist have had lunch over my X-rays more than once. The thing that could make or break the surgery is the tight correspondence between the two doctors. If you ever want to talk more about the surgery, you can e-mail me and maybe we can IM each other. Hopefully I can answer any other questions you have, since I have been through it. Guest guest
I don't know whether the person is still here -- most tend to come and go pretty quickly -- but there was a fellow, a while back, who had jaw surgery as a teen, had a late growth surge, and had to do it over. You want, I'd think, to try to avoid that if possible. I believe that there are x-rays of the hand that can be done to check what's going on with the growth plates and see when growth is likely to be complete. I was also told that jaw surgery can make TMJD better or worse, and there's not really any predicting which it will be. What is known is that it changes the pressures and stresses on the joints. Are you talking with a surgeon (or an ortho) who specializes in TMJD treatment? You may want to do so. I was told that I would need the nutrition I could take in for healing, and my doc asked me not to undertake any workouts or strenuou exertion during the healing periods. Others have resumed activities well before my doc would have sanctioned them. I believe in following your own surgeon's lead about this... He's the one who knows your case best.
