Guest guest
I am new to this group, my father has had Parkinsons for about 18 years and we were told he now has shy draggers which we suspect from the fainting spells and low blood pressure started 3-4 years ago. We are trying to monitor what is affected by medication vs msa progression since he has counteractions and hallucinations with several medications. He is currently on sinemet, mirapex, flourinef, proamatine, atenol and an antibiotic for dermititis. The meds have been working well all summer but I am starting to note slurred speech and recently broken speech patterns where he is frustated because he knows what he wants to say but can't get it out without difficulty. Is this common as MSA progresses or can it be another med adjustment?
Guest guest
Hi mom, Speech problems are common, but early on speech therapy can help greatly. You must continue to do the exercises after you learn them. Guest guest
Greetings " einsteinmom2000 " ;-) ! You wondered: > ... but I am starting to note slurred speech and recently broken speech > patterns where he is frustated because he knows what he wants to say > but can't get it out without difficulty. Is this common as MSA progresses > or can it be another med adjustment? It seems to be a problem. He may have problems with the cerebellum, which some research suggests helps with word retrieval and language 'delivery'. I use that for lack of a proper term. Essentially, when my symptoms are very bad, I have a hard time forming sentences, often resorting to phrases. And getting the right word, tell your father a good way to deal with it is to hunt for another word or even phrase to describe the word you can not recall. Trust me, I understand this sensation. HOWEVER, always bring this type of problem to his neurologist. It may also indicate problems with medications and such. Best bet is to note when it happens, if he's tired, angry, emotional, stressed with lots of people, sound or action. You get the idea. Provide examples of when, the setting, and how it impacts your father. His neurologist might then prescribe a speech therapist or pathologist to help him learn tricks to cope with this. Hope that helps. Regards, =jbf= B. Fisher
