Coalition Highlights- > > land- The coalition spearheaded by land Public Television, just received preliminary funding approval from a local foundation for 5 broadcasts (scheduled between Oct 02-July 03), 2 phone banks (10/9 and Jan 03), 3 community screenings, promotion, and online support. > > Richmond, VA- The Community Idea Station in Richmond is airing the program on October 9th, and has lined up a series of radio interviews to promote the program and the follow-up events. They believe that the newspaper's Prime Living section will feature the program broadcast week. In addition, the coalition is planning a Community Connections event for October 10 at 3pm. Over a dozen organizations, from the Department for the Aging to the Alzheimer's Association, to hospice and home health care agencies will be represented. They'll offer information and resources to the public, and answer questions for caregivers. Following that, at 7pm on the 10th, the Central Virginia Coalition for Quality End of Life Care will offer a free program featuring a two-person dance about caring for an Alzheimer's patient. The choreographer, a local dance department leader, put this together to explore her feelings dealing with her father's illness. They hope to video tape the performance! > , either for Virginia Currents (the local news magazine on WCVE Richmond) or for Scanline (another WCVE program). In addition, representatives from their committee will man the phones at WWBT-12, the local NBC affiliate, on October 14th. They will answer questions about caregiving and give information on upcoming events sponsored by members of their group...seminars, conferences, fundraising events, community forums. The local United Way has developed an Older Adults Partnership, which is exploring the issues related to caregiving and aging in the region. They will be hosting a series of eight community forums to allow the public to identify those issues that are most pressing. > > Baton Rouge, LA- The Louisiana Public Broadcasting station is preparing to host their second outreach event. They are holding a screening on " And Thou Shalt Honor. " for the exercise class of 60 seniors at the Council on Aging. They will give a copy of " And Thou Shalt Honor. " The Caregivers Companion as a door prize! > > Winter Park, FL- Here is an update on activities happening with the Florida Respite Coalition (FRC) and their stakeholders in Florida! ARCH and the National Respite Network have agreed to partner with FRC to hold the 4th International Respite Conference in Orlando, Florida in September 2003. FRC received a private grant to support education and awareness from, and has led to grants from, the Winter Park Health Foundation and The Dr. P Foundation in Central Florida. A discussion on the " And Thou Shalt Honor. " helped to illustrate the national crisis and need for Respite Care. A series of Town Hall Meetings were launched bringing legislators, families, caregivers, respite care providers and other community stakeholders together to discuss the need for Respite Care in Florida. " And Thou Shalt Honor. " was announced to the stakeholders and the clip reel was shown at the meetings to illustrate the plight and need of family caregivers. The keynote speakers included ! > Baker, Executive Director of ARCH, and Jill Kagan, Chair of the National Respite Coalition. The FRC quarterly newsletter, which is distributed to 5,000 recipients around Florida, announced the coming of the " And Thou Shalt Honor. " broadcast. FRC contacted &Noble bookstores to establish a statewide partnership on their promotion of " And Thou Shalt Honor. " The Caregivers Companion in Florida stores. FRC requested space to distribute materials as outreach to consumers. > > New Jersey- The New Jersey Network taped a local program about caregiving in NJ. The hour is called " Caregiving Solutions " and includes an introduction by Governor McGreevy, three video roll ins, three expert panels, and a studio audience of caregivers and professionals. Tune in cards are going out across the state to inform caregivers of the program (both " And Thou Shalt Honor. " and their own production) which will air twice -- October 31st from 8-11 and again on November 3rd from 12:30-3:30. The programs will be followed by a statewide media campaign to inform caregivers of their service options and a statewide professional conference in November. The State of NJ will also be launching a Caregiver Resource Center later this year. They will be meeting with the leadership council of the NJ state chapter of the National Association of Social Workers because they are interested in following up ATSH with a year long professional training initiative. > > 3.
