Guest guest
I am just embarking on a 2 year road to a smile! I have no chin, a crooked nose, my upper teeth are too narrow, my mouth does not close, my lips are short, my front teeth are huge and they are shifted around the corner! My teeth don't meet. My jaws don't fully open. My new dentist says they will be cutting my upper and lower jaw after the braces are on for a couple years....Do you think this is a wise decision for a 48 year old woman? I've lived with the breathing, chewing, smiling, talking and teasing for my whole life.....Comments please. -NEWBIE BARB

Guest guest
Hi & welcome, There are many people on this board that are older than you and have gone through braces & jaw surgery. All of them are happy! I say go for it. I am now 33, I started my treatment when I was 32 and have no regrets at all. I will hopefully be getting the braces off in a few weeks. The surgery is not so bad, you will see! Best, - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " Barb " wrote: > I am just embarking on a 2 year road to a smile! Guest guest
Just think, Barb, if you do this for two years, the remaining, and presumably many, years of your life you will have a functional mouth and nose, be able to breathe and eat better, and like your looks so much that you no longer think of yourself as an anomaly. You will probably also have added a new wing to one or more dentists' homes. (Just kidding) If you don't do this for two years, in two years you will presumably still have the $$$ (if you haven't spent them elsewhere) but otherwise, everything will still be as it is, or maybe not as good. (You're at the age where many jaw problems can assert themselves in the form of pain, clicking, locking, arthritis, etc. -- I know. I had lower advancement surgery in 2002 at age 56. Not to promise you that you won't have such troubles anyhow, but the chances seem better if things are lined up as they should have been.) Is it wise? Up to you to weigh risks and benefits. It ain't easy. Braces aren't fun, and neither is recovery. It is unlikely that you will die because you didn't do it. Can you do it? Heck yes, with a modicum of good humor, optimism, ability to deal with frustration and the attentive care of fine dentists. We're proof of it. I dunno how many members this site has had over the years, but lots. There are a few who have bitter regrets of one sort or another, but they are very few. Most come, commiserate with each other along the way, get through the hard parts and enjoy the improvements they find. Be prepared to be patient. Few things in this business happen on schedule. But that said, the docs are doing the truly hard part -- figuring out how to make the fixes and designing the apparatus to accomplish them. All you have to do is put up with what they give you, and pay them to do it. Best wishes to you. I can't tell you whether it's wise for you. I can tell you that it was wise for me. Probably saved my teeth, in fact. Cammie > I am just embarking on a 2 year road to a smile!
