Guest guest
I am 37 years old and have braces 4 times. I am now going to have surgery to raise my upper teeth up for lack of the technical term! They throw so much at you at the surgeons office it's hard to remember! I think I lucked out as my bottom jaw will only have a little slice/wedge removed from my chin to " push it back " and make my profile aligned. Truthfully I'm scared to death to be " put under " as I've never had any surgery before. Natural child birth twice and the third time I went for the epidural~what I was thinking the first two times without it was crazy! My babies are now 8,5, & 3. Anyhow, I'm not sure what to expect after the surgery (pain, bleeding etc). Any advice will be truly appreciated! The surgeon said some people have a worse time with wisdom teeth being removed. I'd like the truth good and bad! Anxious to meet you all! Jody
Guest guest
Jody, I had surgery 3 weeks ago at the age of 36. I had upper advanced and lower moved back. I did not have a lot of pain. The swelling and congestion is frustrating, the diet can be tough as well depending on if you are banded or wired. All in all it was easier than I thought. Take some time to go back a month or 2 in the posts and skim through them. You will learn all you need to know. I went through about 6 months of old posts pre-op and it really helped me to know what to expect. Marsha > I am 37 years old and have braces 4 times. Guest guest
--- Hi Jody, I just went through upper and lower jaw surgery with genio July 6th. I'm 34 yrs old with a 2, 3, and 5 yr old. My parents came from out of town and are helping for 6 wks. They have been a God- send. It was my first major surgery also. It was nervewracking but I knew it had to be done. The first week was awful then slowly everything started improving. At this point I have no bruises, minimal swelling, numbness cheeks, sides of nose, upper and lower lip, chin area. I'm very pleased with the results. In my case I was banded on the sides for 4 wks, next wk I get the bands off for several hrs a day then I'm done the following wk!!!! I was on liquid diet without any solids until next wk. The hardest part was the first week with the swelling, bruising, phlegm choking me, and nasal congestion. I had minimal pain and used Tylenol. Also the first week sleeping was difficult. I definitely go through the site, its offers alot of great information and will get you prepared. I wasn't allowed to lift for 5 weeks so getting help with the kids was imperative. Also I'm off work for 5 weeks. I was told some people can return in 2 wks. I talk alot at my job along with walking thus it was recommended I take 5 wks off. I'm glad I finally got over my anxiety and had the surgery. Like you I went through braces twice before but I needed the surgery to make things really work out ( should have had it done at age 18!!). Hope all works out for you. Guest guest
I hope this will resolve all your troubles for once and for all... That's why I undertook it at age 56. Yes. General anesthesia is something to take seriously. I was very concerned to let both my surgeon and my anesthesiologist know that if something went wrong, I did not want to survive " in a vegetative state. " Not to be scary (and I was, to my surgeon: His parting comment, at 6:30 p.m. the night before surgery at 7 a.m. was, " Please don't die on me, Cammie. " ) but you would indeed be wise to have documents in order before you go in. That said, it was a breeze, for me. No nausea. No pain beyond the control of the most excellent painkillers they gave me. No problems, whatever. I was weary for at least a month post op. But not a big deal, otherwise. If you have other questions, and a chance to ask them, take along a tape recorder, and ask your surgeon's permission to record his answers. I did, and it was consoling to me to listen to the tape as surgery approached. I did have way worse trouble with wisdom teeth -- I developed a dry socket, which hurt like heck! (That's not a strong enough word, but I don't wanna be offensive.) And as for the anesthesia, I got sort of panicky, until it occurred to me that if I needed lifesaving surgery, from a car accident or stroke or heart attack, I wouldn't hesitate a minute, nor would my docs... Guest guest
Yes, the anesthesia is my biggest fear. With three small children especially. Lots of " what ifs " . Now they have that show on DHC about " when anesthesia fails " or something like that~geez!!!! Not watching that one for sure!! Not worried about the recovery, I can deal with that. Just the " going under " part scares the you know what out of me! > > I am 37 years old and have braces 4 times. Guest guest
Hi ~ So glad to hear your story! No decision is easy when there is kids involved and the " what if's " set in. Being put under and being afraid of not waking up is my main fear out of everything. What's it like when you're put out? Do you remember anything or does it seem to go quickly? Sounds dumb but I have no clue! Is it like dreaming or maybe fainting (I've done that before from the heat) Just curious! Sounds like you've had a great recovery and lots of help to get through it. Best wishes! > > I am 37 years old and have braces 4 times. Guest guest
Hi Jody-- I'm 36 and had my lower jaw set back on July 15th. It's been a long road to get to the point of surgery. I started the entire process in 1998 and it took almost 4 years for me to get the insurance approval (my ortho wouldn't start the braces until after he got the insurance approval for the procedure) and now I've been in braces since Halloween 2002. Anyway, I too was really nervous about being put under. I had never had any type of surgery, or had never been admitted to the hospital other than having our son 11 months ago. He'll be 1 year on August 19th. My husband was amazing during the first 7-10 days. He took care of me, our baby and all our pets (1 dog and 2 cats). Re: fears about going under. I wouldn't be too anxious about it. For me, the experience wasn't that bad. I remember I got a valium when I was admitted on the 15th and then was wheeled into the OR where the anaesthesiologist put something that made me feel really loopy in my IV and then I remember waking up in my room. I don't even remember waking up at all in the recovery room. When I woke up they had given me some anti-nausea medication and some steroids to slow the swelling. Basically, I didn't feel anything and really didn't feel too bad after the surgery. I was given pain killers and really I never even had that much pain, I wouldn't even say pain, it was more soreness for the first 3 or 4 days. Definitely, either less than or equal to having my wisdom teeth pulled. For the first couple of days I had bruising and swelling and now (19 days post-op) I have hardly any swelling and only a little bit of bruising under my neck. Honestly, my biggest struggle with this whole experience has been the liquid diet. I am tightly banded shut (cannot open my mouth) for 6 weeks (until August 26th) and then my OS will look at my bite and if it looks good, he'll remove the bands and just put in two bands to guide my teeth. Today is my first day back at work (ironically, I am a medical librarian in a hospital) and I am glad to be at work. I hope that being at work will help the time go by faster and keep my mind off eating. I still have lower energy, but other than that I feel pretty good and am definitely glad that I did the surgery. I keep reminding myself that the time I will be banded shut is minimal in scheme of things and temporary! I hope that helps. Helen > > > I am 37 years old and have braces 4 times. Guest guest
Jody, I'm 5 weeks post op, and at 41, this was my first surgery as well. Going under was a breeze. By the time you meet your anesthesiologist, you'll already have an IV in place and be settling comfortably in your backless gown. For both my procedures (read back posts for why) they came in, asked a ton of questions, and then gave me IV Valium to begin the settling process. Once in the OR after getting settled on the table, the real anesthesia was given, again IV. I fell asleep very quickly and gently, and awoke in the recovery room when all was done. You'll do great! Guest guest
2 thoughts...if you can endure braces 4times and child birth-any way, 3times...then you can most certainly handle this!!! Guest guest
Hi all and of course Jody, This is an interesting post. I have been " under " about 5 times in my life. The first time I threw up because of the type of surgery I had but the rest of the time I have been as fine as is possible to be. I am not so scared of this as of the procedure we are about to undergo. I fully understand the fear of being put under. It is daunting but I think it is so much better than it was the first time I had it (about 15 years ago) in terms of preventing you from being nauseous etc. My advice to you for when you wake is just " go with " the first hour. I was so drowsy and you feel like you want to be completely with it straight away but you can't. So just breathe in and out slowly and let yourself come out of it slowly. Even when I got my wisdom teeth out I tried to do it this way and it really did make it easier at least mentally for one thing. Hopefully this helps a little little bit.
