Guest guest
Hi Jody, After I registered at the hospital at 6:30AM, I waited nervously in the surgery area to be called back. A nurse called about 6 of us to go back and we each went into a separate holding area (looked like a ER setup). I then had to put my clothes in a baggie and wear the beautiful hospital gown. I waited nervously for approx 30 mins for someone to come back for the next step. Then I was swarmed upon the anesthesilogist (sp?), the nurse anesth, the OR nurse, my doctor and his fellow. I had ID bands placed along with allergy bands. I had the lovely IV placed, a quick sharp pain, not fun. They then asked a whole bunch of questions. Next I was taken to the OR. In my case I walked over. I walked into the OR and layed down on the table. The nurse anesth put some Versed in my IV so I wouldn't remember the 2nd IV, urinary cath, being prepped, compression stockings, etc. I was out pretty quick after she put the Versed in. I don't remember anything afterwards. I was in recovery for almost 2 hours before I woke up or remember anything. I don't remember any dreams. I woke up pretty out of it and don't remember most of recovery, it was like being in a fog. I had humidified oxygen on, a girdle thing wrapped aroung my head, pulse ox, etc. I didn't even feel the urinary cath the whole time it was placed, it didn't hurt the next day to have it removed. I was wheeled up the room around 8 pm (8 hrs in recovery). I was pretty drugged with morphine, phenergan, and Zofran. I had more nausea then pain but of course they kept pumping me with morphine whether I wanted it or not. I slept on and off that night secondary to noise, nurses bothering you, my roomate having problems. Before you know it it's the next day and they are trying to feed you thick pureed stuff with spoons and sucking out of straws. The whole hospital experience was a disaster in my case. You think town would be great but they were experiencing a nursing shortage and the care was poor. My husband was the nurse and did a fine job (he didn't leave my side, and should have been paid). But I won't scare you with that, I survived and was glad to be home after 3 nights. The nausea was the worst, mostly to pain meds. Once I told them I was okay with just Tylenol I felt better. I have good pain tolerance. Everyone differs on this issue. Afterwards the first week was the worst and then it got better. If you have any more questions let me know.
