Guest guest
Hi everyone, I haven't posted here since I first decided to go through with this procedure over a year ago. I had upper jaw surgery on Friday and wow, those first few days were tough. I've had a lot more pain than I thought I would, and the nausea has been pretty terrible, from both the liquid diet and the pain meds. Anyway, today is the fourth full day after my surgery and I think I'm starting to feel a tiny bit better. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what to eat and what not to eat vis a vis nausea. I feel like the Ensure shakes are making me a little sick, but too much salt in a soup makes me feel gross as well. Any help is much appreciated! And I agree it was pretty terrible. I can guarantee that anything creamy or milky can make you feel a bit queasy. Try fresh juices or anything cool and fruity, but not too too sweet. I found that cut the gross taste in my mouth which adds to the sick factor, and made me less nauseous than anything savory or milky. Ginger tea is also apparently good for nausea. Your nausea should go soon, although the antibiotics don't help. I found the pain killers can also cause nausea- so if you are really concerned check with your surgeon as to alternatives. Also try to have short showers to refresh yourself, any congestion in your sinuses can add to the gross feeling. And a final suggestion is to try peppermint oil, not to eat- just to smell. I've found in the past that it can alleviate nausea. Just hang in there, it will pass soon, and each day will get better! ali
Guest guest
Yea I also reccomend fruity drinks. Try Odwalla drinks. They're like smoothies packed with nutrients and calories and taste pretty good. I found some of them are seedy though, so you may have to strain them. > > Hi everyone, > > > > I haven't posted here since I first decided to go through with this > > procedure over a year ago. Guest guest
I had the nausea thing for about the first week. The first thing my doctor asked was if I had stopped the medication (I was on Tylenol with codeine antibiotics). I stopped taking the tylenol w/codeine after about day 4 but finished all the antibiotics. After that I agree, cool fruity drinks and ginger ale helped for me as well as phenergan (an anti-nausea med that my OS prescribed). The phenergan worked like a charm except it made me feel tired. Prior to the phenergan he prescribed suppositories that did not work nearly as well. I am 18 days post-op right now and now I just make sure I eat 6-7 times a day. Initially, my nausea feeling was worse in the morning and I felt progressively better as the day went on. I think it was because when I would wake up it would be like 8 or 9 hours between bits of food. Lesson learned, eat something (even if it's just a little thing) every 2-3 hours to prevent nausea throughout the day. The Ensure and Boost made me sick to my stomach so I tried these Atkins shakes. I think I can pallat them better because they are not so sweet (and they have 20 g of protein!). I hope you feel better soon and you will! Guest guest
Bolthouse juices also makes 100% natural juices, they have a lot of nutrients, and no added sugar. There are a few different flavors and a vanilla chai tea wih protein that is awesome. Guest guest
So sorry you've had so much trouble, both with pain and with nausea. Have you told your doc, or asked someone to tell his office for you? I was sent home with phenergan suppositories just in case of nausea. I never needed them, so don't know how they would have worked. And it is possible that another painkiller might work better for you, too. Some folks have actually found that at least after the first few days, they did better with liquid (Children's) Tylenol and Sudafed, if you had upper, than with stronger stuff. In any case, your doc's staff needs to know that you're having more trouble than expected. Some folks find milk products and sweet things like Ensure (which doesn't actually contain milk) difficult. Maybe broth would work better for you, for now? Can anybody make for you a real, honest, put a chicken and veggies in a pot and simmer, chicken broth for you, as opposed to Mr. 's, who I also find likes the salt pot more than I do? Guest guest
Here we have something called " Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap, " which is wonderful for those showers. Especially on a hot day such as we have been having, although you're probably in the midst of winter, aren't you, Ali? We get the soap in health food places, and it's one of my favorite things when I've been out in 108-degree F. heat index weather.
