How long should I expect to wear braces before surgey will even be

considered? I went to the Oral surgeon yesterday he was great

discussed with me all the procedures I need (upper, lower and

possible rapid expansion of the roof of my mouth)i've had braces

before about 12 years ago so I am thinking maybe I won't be required

to wear them that long I hope!

For me, I had never had braces. My issues were..very narrow palate

and my front teeth were too far foward. I was told over and over

for many years that braces alone would not fix my problem. Yes, I

could have lived like that but I wanted nice looking teeth and my

teeth were wearing down prematurely. So, I was to have braces for 2

1/2 years. At first my surgery was scheduled about 7 months after I

got braces but so much progress was going on that my ortho had me

postpone it. I waited a year (I wanted it done during summer

because of my kids). I had my upper moved up and widened and a

genio. I have had my braces now for 1 year and 8 months. I believe

that I will be in them until probably next April but I do have my

hopes up that it will be sooner.

I had braces once before, for eight years, so I was in your same position. I

did not want to wear them that long! I had them put on in November, and had

oral surgery two weeks ago on July 20th. So, the pre-op braces wasn't that

long...and my ortho said he wants them off in six months tops. Hope this helps!

I had braces on for a year in high school just to straighten my

teeth. Going into college, I was bummed to have to put them back on,

and I was told I would have braces on for about a year before and

after surgery. However, my surgeon had no available appointments for

a whole year when I was ready for surgery, so I had to wait. I had

my braces on for 2 1/2 years when 1 1/2 would have been fine. Post-

op is looking to be about 4-6 months. Everyone is different though

depending on what they have to do.

It really depends how much pre-work your Ortho has to do to get you

ready for surgery. For me that was considerable and it has been

over 2 years but surgery is less than two weeks away! Also you will

have braces through your surgery as thats how they band you together

after surgery. My Ortho told me the average after surgery to have

braces is another 6-9 months to adjust things back into place,

straighten things out, close gaps, etc. It is a long process but

worth it!

Take care.
