Guest guest
what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? I was quoted around 30,000 plus hospital stay and my insurance won't cover it. I just want to know if this is the same for the most of you. Please reply
Guest guest
$30,000 is exactly what Kaiser told me, but they covered it, otherwise none of this would have happened.-- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , jbrunette2000 wrote: > what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? Guest guest
Hi, I had my surgery this past March at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. The overall cost of the surgery was about $32,000, including the overnight hospitalization. This was covered by my insurer, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts, through the extended student plan offered at MIT. However, even if you get the insurance coverage, you should be aware of some of the other costs that you will be expected to incur (written in parenthesis is the amount I paid): 1) Orthognathic Work-Up Fee ($1500 - basically the models, pre-op and post-op xrays and all pre-op and post-op appointments with my surgeon). 2) Pre-op Blood Work ($250 - hematologist). 3) Doctor's Fees ($254.00 - not exactly sure what these charges were and I don't have the paperwork handy). Anyway, I too could not have had the surgery if not for my insurer. Hoep this helps, Tony > > what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? Guest guest
OUCH! Nobody told me about any kind of Orthognathic work-up fee! I'll be sure to ask about that when I go in for my last pre-op visit with my OS. Last I heard I was paying my $200 copay for the surgery, and my $20 copay for each visit to the OS and nothing more. I hope that's the difference between BC/BS Ma and Va. :/ ~Jen > > > what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? Guest guest
There are lots of fees pre surgery. Braces - hopefully are covered under your dental insurance; initial consult with surgeon; then you have visits with surgeon for x-rays and molds ( we had them done 2x, once at 6 months prior to surgery and once at 1 week prior to surgery) any teeth that need to be removed before surgery. All surgical visits after surgery should be covered under his/her initial fee for the surgery, we have 6 months of post operative check ups included in fee. What I have found recently is that the insurance companies, both medica and dental, keep changing their codes and therefore reject the bills. I think this is their way of putting of paying even though they have already approved and said they would cover the costs. Re: cost OUCH! Nobody told me about any kind of Orthognathic work-up fee! Guest guest
I'm in the same boat as you. I need lower jaw advancement and full braces. I was denied three times by United Healthcare and my first OS quoted me around $15,000 for the surgery (now this was for upper and lower surgery) plus around $15,000 for the hospital (1-2 days). Also I have to pay $5,500 for braces. So I was looking at around $30- 35,000 out of pocket. But I saw a second OS yesterday about my surgery and he quoted me $4,000 for the the lower jaw plus the hospital bill. He does all his surgeries at this hospital and they have a discounted rate since he is well known at the hospital (he was the chairman or head of the oral surgeon department), so the total I would be looking at is around $10,000. Plus the $5,500 for braces. When I told him that I was quoted around $30,000, he said that that is way too much. In your case, it depends on what your having done. Waht procedures to you need done? I think $30,000 for just the surgery alone is quite expensive. plus you have to pay the hospital on top of that? My opinion, you need a second opinion. > what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? I was quoted around > 30,000 plus hospital stay and my insurance won't cover it. Guest guest
Nope, no coverage for braces for me. That was all out of pocket. I'm going to have to definately call my OS. They have not mentioned a single word of what they expect me to pay for, and I'd rather know if they are going to charge me than be suprised later. ~Jen > > > > what is the average cost of orthognathic surgery? Guest guest
My surgeon originally asked for a $9000 deposit bec insurance does not cover the chin, considered cosmetic, so I told him I could only give him half that, he said ok...now that we have had the surgery, and have had weekly check ups, he is billing the office for these follow up visits, I suppose he accepts the ins as payment in full since in our contract it states that these visits are all part of his fee. O and don't forge the fee for the anesthesiologist. I have no idea what that will cost me since I haven't received a bill yet. Im sure it will be pretty steep as my daughter was under anesthesia for almost 5 hours. Good luck Re: cost Nope, no coverage for braces for me. That was all out of pocket. Guest guest
Cost is a relative term, and it depends on what procedure you need. With that caveat, here's a breakdown of the payments made on my behalf by my insurance company for my lower only surgery. I had it done on an outpatient procedure, but was in the hospital for 23.5 hours. The braces were paid by dental insurance. All others were Kaiser payments. Item Charge Paid Surgeon 5,850 3,800 Assistant 1,200 650 Anestethia 900 900* Hospital 14,250 3,850 Other 500 500 Braces 4,000 1,000 Total 26,200 10,700 The * is an approximation. I've misplaced that record, but the amount paid is close. My OS did tell me if I didn't have Kaiser, he could have, and does do lower only in his office, so that would have saved me a TON if I went that route. Guest guest
I think the difference is between docs as much as between insurance companies, Jen. If either my ortho or my surgeon charged me such a fee, it must have been included in the prices quoted me. My ortho charged me a separate " records " fee when I started out, and there was a fee (about $100-$150) from my surgeon for the initial consult, but otherwise, everything was included in their one-price quotes. Other docs separate more things out, charging separate fees for splints, prep work, etc. I don't know anything about the logic behind all this, if there is any. I'm glad my docs made it as simple as possible for me, though. Cammie > OUCH! Guest guest
True, but my (and many other) dental policy has a lifetime cap for orthodontics of about $1,200. That doesn't buy a lot of chairtime, wires or brackets... If, God forbid, I ever have to do it again and still have this insurance, I will be on my own. Do I wear the retainers religiously, 14 hours a day, since completing ortho in October 2002 -- you'd better believe it! Cammie > There are lots of fees pre surgery. Guest guest
True, but I've had nothing but trouble with my OS's admin staff so I called them anyways. Sure enough, their " standard practice " is to charge the patient 20% up front, and then reimburse whatever the Insurance pays for after the fact (because they don't want to call and verify how much the insurance is going to cover, even though my letter from the insurance says 100%). That's about $1300 due in two weeks that they failed to even mention to me. She had no explanation for why nobody informed me up front of this " standard practice " . My OS himself has had nothing but rave reviews by my Orthodontist and other patients, but his admin staff is another story all together. I've had to do most of the insurance haggling myself, I have had to do all of the communication between my OS and Orthodontist's office because they refuse to do it themselves, and now, I have to question them about how much money they expect me to pay out of pocket to find out that they have this 20% fee they charge everyone. I'm very glad for this forum, because without all of you I don't think I would have even thought to call and ask them if they expected me to pay anything out of pocket. So, thanks to all of you for being there!! ~Jen > > OUCH! Nobody told me about any kind of Orthognathic work-up fee! > > I'll be sure to ask about that when I go in for my last pre-op visit > > with my OS. > > > > Last I heard I was paying my $200 copay for the surgery, and my $20 > > copay for each visit to the OS and nothing more. > > > > I hope that's the difference between BC/BS Ma and Va. :/ > > > > ~Jen
Guest guest
That's awful, I think, and I certainly sympathize. I have heard of others who have the same problem, and indeed, I have had some problems along this line with another oral surgeon a member of my family sees. It is sooo much easier on the patient when the surgeon is helpful, and has someone on his staff who is a wiz at handling these things. I will never understand why some surgeons wouldn't understand that it's to THEIR best interest, financially and in terms of having folks want their services, to be helpful with the financing end of things. Cammie > > > OUCH! Guest guest
I agree, and I've made sure my OS and my Orthodontist knows I'm dissapointed in the way his admin staff are dealing with my case. I've never had any issues like this with any of my other doctors, and I hope nobody else that sees him has to deal with what I've had to deal with either. If I could go back and choose again, I don't know that I would do it differently though, from what I understand this OS is the best in town and people are bending over backwards to see him. I don't know if I could sacrifice good care just because an admin team can't seem to get their stuff together. Though, I'm sure it's that kind of attitude that enables them to continue the way they are as well. ~Jen > > > > OUCH! Guest guest
I'm just wondering who you have for an insurance company? And also what were there grounds for denial? I have an appointment to see my orthodontist in one week and I plan on being loaded for bear for evidence that I need this surgery. Let everyone know of any changes in the future. Good Luck.
