Guest guest
I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know someone here can help me. You all were so helpfull pre-op, so I'm back I had U/L jaw surgery 1 yr ago. I have four plates and 15 screws holding everything. Before my surgery I had no TMJ or sinus problems. I had the surgery due to an anterior open bite that was so large that when my teeth were together I could stick my ring finger through the space. Couldn't bite anything apart like lettuce, chicken, etc. My bite was off and they said I will have crowns on all my molars here soon due to the pressure I was putting on only those teeth. Now that I've had the surgery I'm having problems and questioning everything. My left jaw pops all the time and gets very sore. I can hear the bones rubbing at times. I'm still completly numb on the upper gums, nose and part of Upper lip. (No numbness on lower) and my nose constantly is running clear (ecspecially when I eat). I went to my surgeon last week and he wants to remover the plates and screws for whatever reason. Also my left condile (bone in jaw) is flat on top from the popping and rubbing. I was in such shock cause I thought I was done with the whole surgery thing. Has anyone else had problems similiar to mine? The doctor is just not a real people person and didn't go into every detail, so I want to know if this stuff is normal. Their office has already called wanting to schedule the removale of everything surgery. I told them I had to wait and take all this is and would get back to them. I'm thinking of seeing another surgeon for a second opinion. Let me know what you think and I hope someone has news to ease my stress on this. Thanks, Robbin
Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear about your problems! I'm about 18 months post-op and just had a conversation with my OS about removing everything too. In my case I asked about it since I felt like getting everything out. BTW, I still have significant numbness in my lower lip and tongue. My OS, who had at 3 months post-op said it would be no big deal to get everything out, this time had a completely different story. He said that at this point in time it might be more damaging to take things out rather than leave them in. He said the bone can sometimes fuse to the screws and plates, and getting them out when this happens can do some damage and leave you vulnerable to infection. So I opted to leave well enough alone. In your case it's extremely unusual to still have numbness in the upper, not to mention your sinus problems. If I were you, I'd strongly consider getting a 2nd opinion even if I had to pay out of pocket. I would need to be convinced that the plates and screws are causing the problems and not something else. If you have recent x- rays, bring them with you to another OS for review. Good luck! --Neil > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > someone here can help me. Guest guest
I don't think removing the hardware is going to do anything for the TMJ problems. It's not the norm to have the kind of symptoms you are post-op, at least regarding the joints. Numbness, yes, it can take a long time to go away, although the degree to which you say you have it is not as normal (from what I've read and experienced myself). Ask your surgeon what relief you can expect from the hardware removal surgery, specifically for your sinus & joint problems. I would get a second or even third opinion. The joint problems sound similar to what a friend of mine had happen to her, in her case, the cartilage which protects the joints from rubbing bone on bone had been dislodged during surgery (2nd surgery). She is having physiotherapy to try to help, and is taking medication for the pain. There are a few members here who've had problems with the joints, and multiple surgeries. I think the best way to ease your stress is to get answers from someone who is a specialist in TMD, and your present surgeon may not have the expertise in this area. Sorry if that causes a bit more stress for you. > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > someone here can help me. Guest guest
Robbin, Sorry to hear about your problems post op. I would def. get a second and maybe a third opinion. I had surgery to correct an open bite last October. I am still in braces. I do have numbness on my upper gums but this does not bother me at all. I am curious to know if your bite has remained closed or if you noticed changes in the bite that you think are from the problems that you are experiencing. Guest guest
Hi, I had surgery for an anterior open bite on 24/03/04 and have had some tmj pain on the left side since. My jaw also pops but it did this before. I did also have one episode of tmj pain at around christmas time. The pain i get isn't all the time so I'm hoping it will settle with time as my surgery was only four months ago. I also had trouble with my nose after the surgery, it bled for ten days afterwards and i then had clear fluid for a while after that. This has now stopped but my nose isn't the same as before. I would definitely get a second opinion as your surgeon sounds quite vague and to get all these problems a year out doesn't sound quite right. Good luck, it must be horrible to be having all this trouble after you've had the surgery that was meant to sort all the problems. > > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > > someone here can help me. Guest guest
Hi Robbin: Well I can relate to you regarding sinus problems. I had upper and lower almost 9 months ago. I struggled for a few months afterwards trying to find out why my voice had changed. After going to an ENT, I discovered the Lefort procedure had left a hole about the size of a nickel along the bottom of my septum causing a resonance issue with my voice. 2 months ago I had surgery to correct this as well as a severely deviated septum caused by the surgery. The hole in my septum is now smaller, but I may need yet another surgery to close it completely. I would definately get a second opinion from another maxofacial surgeon as well as an ENT if you are having sinus issues. I would not have had the upper had I known about these issues. On the bright side, my bite is perfect and I will be getting my braces off next week. However, the treatment was harsh on my teeth and they will need bleaching and some cosmetic work before it is a finished piece. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can find some answers that will give you some relief. Mark > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > someone here can help me. Guest guest
I definitely think that if I had doubts such as you do, I'd want at least a second opinion, and perhaps a third... Preferably from a surgeon who is particularly knowledgeable in such matters (I think of minirascal's surgeon in North Carolina, here, but there may well be someone of equal caliber near wherever you may be) AND is a " people person " who will take the time to talk with you and make explanations. Thank Heaven, though, I am not knowledgeable about such matters. Cammie > > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > > someone here can help me. Guest guest
I agree with anyone that has told you to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Also, let your surgeon know that you're getting other opinions. If you do get another opinion, make sure you get your current OS to foward all information, including xrays and his comments... I personally think that ones stress would be eased if more professional opinions were gathered.... I believe most things are fixable, but it may not be from this OS... Good luck! > I really need to talk with someone about my situation and I know > someone here can help me. You all were so helpfull pre-op, so I'm > back I had U/L jaw surgery 1 yr ago.
