Guest guest
Hey there everyone! I have had for this entire week this strange metallic taste in my mouth and I was wondering if this is a problem that I should see my dentist/ortho about or if it will go away on it's own. No matter what I do it won't go away, even immediately after brushing and rinsing with Listerine, it is still there. Could this be caused by fillings? I read that sometimes when there are two metals in your mouth they can interact. I just recently (3 weeks ago) had cement taken off of my bottom molars by my ortho and one of them has a filling in it. Because this tooth has never been exposed the entire time I've had braces, do you think this could be the cause of this? Any input would greatly appreciated! Thanks! Guest guest
I'd call my ortho's office about it, or my dentist's, if that feels better to you. I had a metallic taste, too, just after the appliances were installed. (It's a long story, but I also got my second metal crown on a back molar, with a bracket soldered onto it, because my ortho said that would be cleaner and easier for everybody than banding yet another crown.) I mentioned it to my dentist, and he said, " I hope it's not the crown. " I don't know still what it was, but it went away in about a month. I do think you should ask someone, though, because there are some folks who have metal sensitivities. I can't remember, either, where you are in the process. If you've had fairly recent surgery, it may be explained by some post-op taste changes. Usually those eventually return to more or less the pre-op sensibilities. Fiddlesticks lady found that even the most excellent of her favorite red wines, about which she's a connoiseur (connoiseuse, Ray?) tasted like plonk for a time post-op. Has to do with healing nerves and numbness, I think. Happily, that situation resolved itself, and she's now back to enjoying the finest at its peak. Cammie > Hey there everyone! Guest guest
Thanks Cammie, I was away for the weekend and found a temporary fix. I don't know how good it is to be doing, but I put the temporary filling stuff they sell at the drug store on top of that tooth and the taste was infinately better. I called my ortho today and she said it may be a loose filling and I should see my dentist. My dentist is away all week though, so it's waiting until next week unless there is some emergency with it. I am still pre-op (my OS is supposed to be calling me this afternoon with my date, it has been scheduled, I just don't know when for) so I hope I have time to deal with this before my surgery, but we'll see. . . Oh, yeah, someone wrote that I could be pregnant. Well, I know that I am not, but the funny thing is when I told my husband about the taste I mentioned that it was a sympton of pregnancy, I got a funny look for that one! Well, thanks again. I'll get you updated if/when I find out what it is, and when my OS finally calls with that date! Kim > > Hey there everyone! Guest guest
Well, since I posted the question, I'll tell you all the follow-up (I hate when I search the archives and the actual answers aren't posted). I had called my ortho and she said that I may have a loose filling, so I called and scheduled an appointment with my dentist. After about two weeks, the taste disappeared. I decided to keep my appointment with my dentist as a " just in case " since my surgery is in 1 week (I didn't want to have a filling fall out while I couldn't open my mouth). Anyway, I just got back from the dentist, my fillings are all fine. He said that there are all kinds of things that can cause these tastes and that he really couldn't tell me what it was, just that I don't have any loose fillings. He suspects it was a reaction of some kind to some metal in my mouth (God knows there's plenty of it). So anyway, taste is gone, fillings are fine, now I just need August 24th to come for my surgery to be over!! Kim > > > > > > Hey there everyone!
