Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Does anyone post op use flax seed oil as an aid to avoid constipation? I was told to try mineral oil and I was looking it up on line and there seems to be absorbtion issues when taking supplimental vites. I remembered flax seed has omega-3's and fiber, protien, etc so it seems a good thing to take. Can anyone help me out on this? Bueller? Anyone? I want to buy it today if I can use it. Thanks so much! Guest guest
Hi, I don't know about flx seed oil but I won't stop taking Benefiber!! I was also an unfortunate one at about three weeks...I wound up at Kaiser urgent care with a very caring nurse who helped me every way she could, including several enemas. I don't think they prepare us for this at all. I literally could not walk for days, first the constipation and then the hemorrhoids.... Guest guest
Hi Maggie, You poor thing! That had to have been awful! I know, you are correct, they don't adequately prepare you for this problem at all. It needs to be better expressed I think in that binder. So how much benefiber a day are you using and how are you using it? I was incorporating it into my food at first and now I have switched to drinking it in crystal light two times a day, 2 1/2 tablespoon fulls at a time. The limit is 5 tablespoons a day and that doesn't really get things moving very well. I am beyond frustrated at this time. Guest guest
You'll probably do better with the ground flax seed rather than the oil. Keep in mind that part of the reason RNY works is that it causes malabsorbtion, and part of what we malabsorb is oils and fats. For this reason, we can't really count on absorbing anything in oil form. If you're looking for omegas, check out Coromega. It's a gel form which is much better absorbed. Go to www.coromega.com. I get it at vitalady.com, along with all my other supplements. For day to day prevention of constipation, I also use generic Colace, which is just a stool softener. Don't confuse it with the stuff that has a laxative. specialkmix2000 wrote: > Does anyone post op use flax seed oil as an aid to avoid > constipation? Guest guest
Thanks for your reply Eleanor! I was wondering about the oil not absorbing too. If I do this Colace, where do I get this? If I do this then I really wouldn't have to use the flax seed then right? Or would you still recommend that I do that as well? I have to check out the vitalady site.... Did you find a good calcium source there? Thanks again for responding I was hoping you would see this post! Kay > > > Does anyone post op use flax seed oil as an aid to avoid > > constipation? Guest guest
Hi Kay, Well, glad to help! Ok, my answers are inline. specialkmix2000 wrote: > If I do this Colace, where do I get this? Any drug store, Target, Walmart, etc. Grab a bottle of the name brand stuff, and memorize the active ingredient. Then look for the store brand or generic. Usually it will say " Compare to Colace " or something like that. Most of the time, if you can find a generic, you're going to spend a lot less, and in most cases, the generics are made by the name brand folks. You just don't have to pay for the advertising budget that way! > If I do this then I really wouldn't have to use the flax seed then > right? I personally don't use flax seed, or any other fiber additives. I do eat some complex carbs, so that takes care of my fiber needs for the most part. I do take two of the Coromega packets (from vitalady) every day, so that takes care of any omega needs. > I have to check out the vitalady site.... Did you find a good calcium > source there? Yup, good calcium sources, as well as any other supplement we need. What I really appreciate is that I know that anything she sells is in a form we can absorb and use. had surgery herself I think eleven years ago, followed by her hubby a year later. Her general rule is that if it ain't good enough for her, she ain't gonna sell it. For calcium, I get the capsules which include magnesium and vitamin D. Yes, from her. > Thanks again for responding I was hoping you would see this post! You're welcome! -- Eleanor Oster eleanor@... Guest guest
Eleanor, I am still confused on the Colace, I was looking online and it said it was a stool softener laxative? But there is one that is just a stool softener? The laxative says not to use more than one week? It must be late in the day, oh wait, I haven't eaten my lunch yet, that explains it. Can you tell me which brand you get? I have Longs up in Napa as well as Walmart.... I hear you on the generic stuff. I do that all the time! I promise I won't bug you again (for at least a little while lol) Going to check out vitalady tonight! Sounds like a winner there! Take care, Kay > > > If I do this Colace, where do I get this? > > Any drug store, Target, Walmart, etc. Grab a bottle of the name brand > stuff, and memorize the active ingredient. Guest guest
Hi Kay, Wow, you're taking more than twice as much as I am, but it seems to be ok. The problem is that benefiber has no stimulant. Colace is the same way. If you get peri-colace, it is a stool softener and stimulant. When I spoke to in Richmond, she told me not to take the colace because she said our bodies become dependent on it and that I should use 1/2 the normal dosage of Benefiber. She also told me to take some mineral oil, but that is very harsh on your body. It's okay for now, but I won't let it go for as long as I did that time. I really thought that with so little food it made sense not to have been " regular " . If I were you, I'd get the peri-colace, it's generic over the counter. I paid about $4. at Wal-mart.
