Hi All,

My husband and I will be traveling to his parents house this Thanksgiving. The

in-laws are aware of SCD but do not fully understand all of it nor do I expect

them too. I am hoping to fix some legal sides to take along to share but I am

concerned about the turkey. I've been eyeing the birds in the grocery store and

see that all of the brands contain sugar in the solution. Is this one of those

things that is an exception to the rule and is legal? Does anyone know of a

legal brand so I can tell my in-laws? Perhaps the answer is a fresh bird.

Please let me know what you have done for your Thanksgiving turkey.

Thanks,

Holly O.

I order my free-range bird from Bates' House of Turkey.

They don't show it on the web site, but they have an " oven ready

turkey " that is just great.

Thanks, I don't see any info on additives, but I trust you have checked this out

and it's only turkey.

Judging from the turkeys in my supermarket, they will have me as a customer too.

I don't eat it anymore but when I did, I found that turkey from whole foods

didn't contain any kind of sugar solution. I noticed that I was getting ill

after work's holiday party each year and happened to notice one year that it

said " sugar " on the bag. Oops!

I think to be safe you will need a fresh bird and possible

organic. I talked to the butcher once (pre-SCD) and asked him why on

earth they use sugar basting solutions on the turkeys. He curled his

lip a bit and said :My husband and I will be traveling to his parents

house this Thanksgiving. The in-laws are aware of SCD but do not

fully understand all of it nor do I expect them too. I am hoping to

I suspect you will need a fresh bird or organic to get " pure " turkey.

Once I asked the butcher why on earth they use a sugar basting

solution and he said " it's just so they can keep them in good shape

frozen longer than they should be frozen " .

Last week our grocery store had a 50% off special on turkeys and DH

(who does most of the shopping for us) asked if he should get one. I

reminded him of our rule that a 2% basting solution is probably OK,

anything over that has sugar. But I told him to go ahead and get a

turkey for himself, which he did. And this one listed an 8% basting

solution! I've never seen one that high! I didn't even take a nibble

and he now has an awful lot of packages of turkey in the freezer (on

his shelves, we have a his-and-hers but segregated freezer).

Yah, that's it. They have a store are Mile 130 on I-65 -- Harry and I

stop there every time we drive up to Atlanta. I get the plain roasted

turkey, Harry gets other things.

I had been getting my turkeys from a local farmer, but Katrina and

post-Katrina issues forced him out of business.

So, in casting around for a Really Good Turkey, I went ahead and ordered

two last year -- one for Thanksgiving, and one for Christmas. They

arrived solidly frozen, defrosted nicely, and cooked up

wonderfully.

I have two on order for this year.

Be careful of their other turkey products -- the smoked turkey used to be

SCD safe as it was cured wityh honey. However, that changed in the last

five years and now they're using <sigh> sugar. However, my husband

who is not SCD, says their other turkey stuff is delicious, so you might

want to consider it for the non-SCDers in your family.

That was how I found my local farmer.

I recommend the Bates because they are a relatively small company who,

although they have been asked and asked to franchise their foods, refuse

to expand out of their small area because they could not control the

quality of their turkeys. These birds are free-range in pecan groves. And

they taste like it.
