Guest guest
Hi, Can people share if they've had a significant set-back on the SCD by using antibiotics, and how long it took to get over it? I've been on SCD from mid-March of this year for Hashimoto's, bacterial overgrowth (klebsiella, enterbacter, citerbacter, gamma and alpha streps), some undiagnosed inflammatory bowel disease (I think it is probably just the carbo-intolerance that Elaine talks about in the celiac section of BTVC), and chronic fatigue, and it has worked miracles in my life. But I also had an h pylori infection, and after roughly six months on the diet, I decided I had progressed enough to try the flagyl/clarithromycin/PPI regime (on SCD all the while). I felt bad on the antibiotics, and I felt even worse for about three weeks afterwards. I'm pretty sure it's yeast, given the weirdness in my throat that got worse with on the antibiotics. And I felt less bad last week (week four following the ABX) but I'm feeling HORRIBLE again, and am freaking out that I've somehow undone all the good, and SCD won't work because the little good biota I had in me were killed off. Maybe its just a regression/die-off, since I just tried started HCl again What I really want are encouraging words, but I'll also take whatever truths people may have, about re-bounding after a course of antibiotics. I am hoping this too shall pass, but it's hard to return to square one after all my hard work. Thanks!!

Since you stayed true to the diet through the antibiotics, there would be no reason for the bad bacteria to come back. If anything, the antibiotics would kill them all! Now the thing will just be to re-establish the good bacteria. So as long as you stick to the diet and eat a lot of yogurt, fermented veggies, and other probiotic things, I bet you'll be better in no time =) Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Guest guest
Thanks, Alyssa, I so appreciate the encouragement. I'm trying to stay positive, but you know how it goes when you're feeling bad. Tuning in here and at Pecanbread always helps, because people know exactly what I mean when I say I just feel so bad. The wonderful people in these groups have been a lifeline, particularly when things are so bad that I don't know how I'm going to carry on. But then I think, I can make it through just one more night, tomorrow's another day, and maybe I'll feel better then. God bless.
Guest guest
Yikes! Things can really get messy health-wise for us on this board!! I have certainly been there myself plenty of times. Have you looked at colloidal silver or grapefruit seed extract? From what I understand, there is a lot of controvery and misinformation out there, especially about colloidal silver, however, if it is made properly (with distilled water and small silver particles NOT SILVER PROTEINS) then it can be used safely. I know of people who drink it by the glass every day and never have problems. > > Hi, > > Can people share if they've had a significant set-back on the SCD by using antibiotics, and how long it took to get over it? Guest guest
Antibiotics were always so hard on my system – I am sorry you are feeling so bad. Since antibiotics kill off everything, good & bad, you need to repopulate your gut with the good guys, even while you’re on the antibiotics. It is recommended to take a legal probiotic 2 hours away from the times you take the antibiotics. Guest guest
I feel so bad for you. These periods are miserable when we feel awful and have no idea how long they will last. I agree with Alyssa. I think you've done a great job of sticking to it through the antibiotics and will be better off when things settle out. I would suggest really really hitting the good bacteria, whether acidophilus, fermenented, yoghurt, whatever. All if possible. Before I found SCD I found (though I didn't do it, found SCD instead) a program by Dr Pimentel where he uses massive antibiotics to kill off the bad gut stuff and then you have to repopulate with the good ones. So this round of antibiotics probably will have helped get rid of the baddies for you, you just need to encourage the goodies. And the best of good luck in this. I've felt perfectly awful for many years, and it's no fun. Getting better is slow.
