Guest guest
My daughter Grace will be two in a month, and still does not talk. (Well she does have a few words.) Anyways, by about 18 months she was very frustrated trying to tell us something that we just could not understand. We believe her mental ability to talk is age appropriate, but her facial muscle tone restricts her mouth to talk. We have started her on sign, although it has taken awhile. Right now, most of her communication is sign or sound with sign, and about 5 words. We have learned the sign through our county department of MR/DD and a special program in Ohio, developed for challanged kids under the age of three. At three she will transition into her local school district for a special needs preschool. I am very fortunate to have such great support in this area, I don't know where she would be without them. Do you have your daughter in speech therapy yet? Grace will be starting one on one speech therapy in June, and also a Speech camp this summer. I am really hoping it helps. I will also include a list of websites that show some signs. I have not been on them all, but were given to me by a specialist in childhood sign so I am sure they are all good. www.bconnex.net www.baby-talk.com.nz www.mybabyfingers.com www.kindersigns.com www.sign2me.com www.signingtime.com www.signingtime.com www.signingwithkids.com www.signingbaby.com www.handspeak.com Hope thes are a help to you. Guest guest
Hi everyone. Abbey will be 4 in August and she still isn't talking yet. She is starting to show real frustration as a result of her inability to communicate. We have been trying picture exchange for a while but she seems to want to " say " more than the pictures allow her to. Cognitively she is slightly delayed but is at apprx. a 24 mo. level (although I believe the ST underestimates a bit). Any one had any luck with sign language? and how did you find someone to teach your family? Thanks,
Guest guest
Sheldon is 2 1/2 and he signs quite a bit. Without the signs, he would have no way to communicate with us so we are very glad that he uses the signs, although his signing is intermittent and he constantly loses signs. He's also tried PECs but seems to prefer signing. His speech therapist has taught some signs. My daughters have learned some signing from the local Association for the Hearing Impaired, they have classes. We've learned most of the signs we use from a dictionary. I like the " American Sign Language Dictionary " by L. A. Sternberg. It often explains the origin of the signs, which makes it easier for me to remember the signs. Our local library has a copy. Guest guest
Thanks for the sites . Yes, Abbey has been in ST,PT,OT since 8 mo. but she's never gotten much out of them, unfortunately. She just progress' at her own pace: when she decides to do something that's it! One day she was crawling and the next she stood up, took a step, and she was off! She is enrolled in our primary school and she really enjoys it a lot. She has actually gotten better results there than in private therapy which is the opposite of what I had been told. She takes swimming and we'll start horseback riding this summer and I think that those do wonders for her! Good luck with camp! I wish I could find such a local support system! > My daughter Grace will be two in a month, and still does not talk. (Well she > does have a few words.)
