when we take him to the mall EVERYONE stares and it hurts me so much. I am getting impatient but there is nothing I can do.

Angel, I have no advice on the walking issue, as my daughter is 7 and cannot even roll over. But I do know all about the staring thing, and yes, some days it drives me up a wall! What particulary gets me is the staring, slack jawed children who feel the compulsion to gape at Chelsea as if she were a circus sideshow. I mostly try to ignore it and go about our business. On occasion, I will stare down one of these little annoyances until they look away. The other thing that gets my eyes rolling is the comment "oh what a cute baby!" Which was wonderful When she was a baby, but I do not know any baby that is almost 4ft and 60lbs. I have learned to take it all in stride and turn the other cheek, because 99.9% of the time, that other person has absolutly NO CLUE what our life is like, and their observations are based on their own assumptions. I have also gotten used to tube feeding Chelsea in public, it took awhile. I used to try to "hide" in a corner or back of the store or restaraunt, but it never quite worked, somebody always stares.

However, if I overhear a child asking ?'s about what they see, or an adult making a comment, I try to give a brief explanation and introduce Chelsea (as well as her age). I definatly answer any ?'s directly asked, and am encouraging to any child who comes up to talk to Chelsea, which happens occasionally. Toddler boys just love those big wheels on her wheel chair=)

The staring is frustrating, I know, it is just something that comes woth the territory. I have no advice for you, other than that I have just learned to deal with it, and I appreciate those who are close to me and understand all the more. Is there some kind of local support group you could attend? I always find it helpful to talk with other parents who have special needs kids. I have been attending a 1x a month support group for parents thru Chelsea's school for about 3 yrs.

HTH and take care!
